A couple of weeks ago we travelled to Denmark, WA. I wave at anyone towing a van, camper trailer or anything that looks like a holiday load.
I estimate at least 60 vehicles passed by that i waved to.
I received two waves back.
I checked the front of my car and could not see any of my footy team colours or stickers.
Where has the wave gone, is the tide out and will it come back?

Welcome to the gang Gonc, enjoy here and out in the playground.
I have noticed a lot of 'weekend warriors' out and about for longer periods of time since CV19 reared it's ugly head, and good luck to them. Maybe they aren't as friendly as people that travel for long periods of time normally or are full time on the road.
I have noticed where I am that SOME people don't seem as friendly and avoid eye contact.

maybe when we reach certain age we start to look like grumpy old men an they try and ignore us

It seems to be on the long stretches, where most people wave
Not many (if any) seem to wave in the built up areas
Some times I wave an an RV (camper trailer/wizz bang/caravan/motorhome/tent on roof/etc), and they do not wave back I therefore do not wave to the next one, but at the last second, I see them waving to me
I say, wave if you enjoy waving, (which I mostly do), or do not wave if you do not want to, which I have been guilty of doing

Its not Just when caravaning. I live in a small village on the Gippsland Lakes and walk about 5k out to the beach. Locals in the area wave and say giday but as soon as the tourist season starts and they flood in from Melbourne its a different. The local continue, but the others mostly look at me like Im nuts walking out there and very view acknowledge the wave. They must live in their own terrified bubble in the city.

We went to WA via SA in March 2019, but quickly returned from Busselton as the border closures were announced. On the way, I nearly had Repetitive Stain Injury from waving at other travellers who were waving at us.
Sometimes though, I was concentrating on my driving activities and missed doing a wave back.
Also, as we headed east, past the WA border checkpoint at Eucla, I did not wave at the 1.5 km line of Sandgropers waiting in a queue at that checkpoint. I would have been worn out.

Country people usually put a wave up whether you are towing a van or not, some just do it say hi as you pass.
A lot more friendly folk in the bush.

I agree with this,
We're on east coast of Tas,
All the locals wave, towing or not,
Just habit.

Welcome to GN's Gonc, I always raise two fingers off the wheel to locals and vans, In western NSW last year a C0CKY was at his gate waiting to turn onto road we were travelling - the child-bride gave her Royal Wave the C0CKY responded by thrusting his whole upper body out the driver's window with a most enthusiastic two hands in the air wave - it set us both off laughing on our way. Had to be there to enjoy the fun of it.
