Hi Possum....in the course of my employment,I regularly visited familes who cried 'poverty',and bleated about how tough life was for them,but on many occassions these poor,hard done by individuals would drink several cans of beer and smoke many cigarettes while I was there.Yeah,times certainly are tough.....Ever thought of getting a job? So yobarr, your saying the 800,000 put out of work due to covid besides the 1.1 million already out of work, for the total 75 thousand jobs that are only available, are all bludgers, you maybe including the disabled and the aged as well.

And yes yobarr, the money is ridiculous, it is very, very hard to live on 40 dollars a day. I know a battler, whom is living in a tent, beside the river here, whom only has a bike, needs to live in the tent, as he has a dog, and cannot stay in a c.van park, in town , because of that dog. He rides 50km one way to town on a pushbike, for 3 days a week, for an offsider mowing job, they cut his unemployment by 20 dollars a day, because he was earning only an extra 130 per week. This guy is trying, he is not a bludger, and hates being called it. I wanted him to move into my van, but our council will not allow that. What else are people like him supposed to do?

it is 560 dollars a fortnite mate, at the moment, it is an extra 2 hundred a fortnite for covid co-payment, but at the end of March it goes back to 560. And if he didn't have my address, he wouldn't be getting that, as without an address, you don't get Centrelink payments.

How much do you live on yobarr?, could you live on 40 a day, running a car, a house, a c.van, rego insurance, utilities, food, vehicle upkeep, no their is noway, you would put up with it, and show me the thousands of unskilled jobs, and don't say Picking, they wont take anyone with out a passport, aka, a Backpacker whom is not willing to work for less then 40 dollars day as well.

Thanks Stretch, yes the Government Ministers and MP's have a lot to answer for, labelling every one on welfare and vet payments as bludgers, then the rest of their voters jump onboard and say the same, not knowing what each welfare client situation is. The media is to blame also for this. We all need to grow a spine, and look on all people as equals, not to be kicked and downtrodden , when they are in a bad financial, and/or are jobless, disabled and aged/vet pension position.

Yobarr I can remember a few years ago same happened in Albury. The Border Mail paper showed photos of something like approx 6 or 7 doz long necks at the back door but those people were making a big thing about the payments they were receiving at the time. It caused an almighty uproar at the time and carried on in letters to the editor of the paper for some time. Most people not supporting those involved

There seems to be some confusion here.Those,who now are aged pensioners but have worked all their lives,and contributed to the Govt coffers for many years,no doubt deserve our help,as do members of our armed forces,who have helped keep us "young and free".And I doubt very much that "the rest of the voters" would be too much worried about helping these people? BUT,many people on the unemployment benefit never have worked, except for "under the table" payments,do not want to work,and never will work.Then we get the hundreds of thousands of solo parents who believe that it is their "right" to be supported by hard working Australian taxpayers. And don't start me on telling how tough things are for these people.... I've seen it all. Many years ago I met a young couple where she had weaseled her way onto a disability pension.....nothing wrong with her......so he then had to stop work to be her "carer.To fill in the day,he took a "cashie" job driving a school bus for $50/day.She was getting a ridiculous amount...I will not quote it....for doing nothing,so between them they lived VERY comfortably,thank you very much.Persons who are GENUINELY disabled....and I could tell some stories here....obviously need support,but not to the extent that they live "comfortably" while the rest of us work hard to support them.Food and shelter should be limit of the help provided....not money to buy cigarettes,alcohol,or other smoking material,play pokies,frequent the TAB.....yes,these things all do happen.Unfortunately,there are so many bludgers that they now have too much voting power,so things can only get worse? Yobarr, I been called a bludger, because I receive a DVA pension as well as some from centrelink for a disability. This is why it get's my goat when people make unsubstantiated claims against people on welfare from any source/type of government payment. The word hurts and I bet it hurts the 1.9 million on unemployment benefits today, whom are on the receiving end of the slur mostly . Anyhow, I am over it, you wont change your opinion, and neither will I.

IF at 11.00 am he still has no job.....ring Northern Daily Leader tell a reporter what you are doing ....ie standing in Westdale with a sign looking for a job.
ALL/EVERY reporter will drive out to you ....take photos, do a story etc etc for the next days paper. ( it is what the media refer to as a human interest story and they cant get enough of those stories)
Make sure you give your phone number to reporter.
Next day.........sit around Tamworth until your phone rings.
Easy peasy and works 100% of the time. In fact is is as close to garanteed (sp) as I can think of.
Your friend does need to "look presentable".....cover any tatts(?), get a haircut(?), have enough cash to (maybe) O/N in both Armidale and Tamworth. He WILL get a job without even having a resume (sp)!!!

Maaate....because I could see this thread going nowhere,with a couple of posters seeming to use convoluted logic to support their claims,I had stopped following it.Never having been a master of diplomacy,I had refrained from further comment,but this post deserves a positive response. With literally thousands of farmers in urgent need of workers,anybody who says "Derr..there's no work" is living in fantasy land! Way back in the 70s I was living in the back of an old Valiant station wagon.Each day I would find an industrial area,and walk the streets,looking for paid work.Invariably, someone would go out of their way to find small jobs for me.Then I went bush,just drifting up to farmers' houses.....always I found something. It took little for me to live in the style I had become accustomed to.Local pub in country towns always is a good place,and I was even woken one day at 3am,at Carnarvon,by an old chap who owned a fishing trawler...a crew member hadn't fronted,so I had a job.No work? Just to add another perspective to this tread. Not that it needs diverting anymore from the OP!!
We had a business that paid piece rates. Horticultural. Outdoor work. (I wont be specific so as to protect the innocent). Our local workers could make better than the award rates doing the work. Just. Some couldn't. But the local workers only worked the award 8 hour days. The work had to go on regardless of hours or weather. (Within reason). So we contracted workers from the UK, Germany and Canada. They did piece rates and made very good money. Worked dawn to dark. (Subject to them being sober!!). Seasonal work. One day as the season was about to kick off I got a phone call from immigration dept. They had 2 of our contractors at the airport and were about to turn them back to the UK. I explained to immigration that as hard as we tried we couldn't get Australians to do the work. Immigration told us they would release the contractors straight away because they heard the same story over and over.
Why am I telling this story? Because many many Australians have become addicted to welfare. It has become away of life. And yes I fully support welfare for those who can't work for various reasons. The thing is that the welfare is too close to the minimum wage. Second the 'incentive' to get off welfare is to soft.
I know this will arc up a few here. But tax payers want the government to get value for the taxes they pay. Paying someone not to work isn't value for money.

Bruce,another great post! I have highlighted the comments that I most agree with. Welfare has become a way of life,and many seem to believe that it is their "right" to do nothing,and get paid for it! So the general idea here is that the unemployed are getting too much money, at $280 per week, and they should work for that money at $7 per hour. That is good to know, that you people as well, would happily work for $7 per hour yourself. So the guys and girls slogging away 12 hour days picking should be paid no more then $7 per hour as well. The government should know, that the majority of the adult population are quite happy to work for not more then $7 per hour as well. The sooner they adjust pay rates to this the better it will be for Australian businesses including the poor farmer and Australia proper.

I am an NDIS client as well. I have employed a cleaner, luckily she lives in our village, now, If I offered her just $7 per hour, that seems to be the agreed figure for people to work for that GN forum members agree upon, do you think she would work for me. I also today employed a mowing contractor, He has to travel 2 hours round trip to come and do the lawn, plus it is a 2 hour lawn, do you think, he would come for just $7 per hour. You people have to have a sincere look at your values, and beliefs, before you make comments on what people have to charge per hour to successfully get to live on, survive with and hopefully make a little bit of profit out of their hourly rate. $7 per hour are slave wages, and you guys know it, and wouldn't work for that money yourselves.

ALL/EVERY reporter will drive out to you ....take photos, do a story etc etc for the next days paper. ( it is what the media refer to as a human interest story and they cant get enough of those stories)
Make sure you give your phone number to reporter.
Next day.........sit around Tamworth until your phone rings.
Easy peasy and works 100% of the time. In fact is is as close to garanteed (sp) as I can think of.
Your friend does need to "look presentable".....cover any tatts(?), get a haircut(?), have enough cash to (maybe) O/N in both Armidale and Tamworth. He WILL get a job without even having a resume (sp)!!!

Maaate....because I could see this thread going nowhere,with a couple of posters seeming to use convoluted logic to support their claims,I had stopped following it.Never having been a master of diplomacy,I had refrained from further comment,but this post deserves a positive response. With literally thousands of farmers in urgent need of workers,anybody who says "Derr..there's no work" is living in fantasy land! Way back in the 70s I was living in the back of an old Valiant station wagon.Each day I would find an industrial area,and walk the streets,looking for paid work.Invariably, someone would go out of their way to find small jobs for me.Then I went bush,just drifting up to farmers' houses.....always I found something. It took little for me to live in the style I had become accustomed to.Local pub in country towns always is a good place,and I was even woken one day at 3am,at Carnarvon,by an old chap who owned a fishing trawler...a crew member hadn't fronted,so I had a job.No work? We had a business that paid piece rates. Horticultural. Outdoor work. (I wont be specific so as to protect the innocent). Our local workers could make better than the award rates doing the work. Just. Some couldn't. But the local workers only worked the award 8 hour days. The work had to go on regardless of hours or weather. (Within reason). So we contracted workers from the UK, Germany and Canada. They did piece rates and made very good money. Worked dawn to dark. (Subject to them being sober!!). Seasonal work. One day as the season was about to kick off I got a phone call from immigration dept. They had 2 of our contractors at the airport and were about to turn them back to the UK. I explained to immigration that as hard as we tried we couldn't get Australians to do the work. Immigration told us they would release the contractors straight away because they heard the same story over and over.
Why am I telling this story? Because many many Australians have become addicted to welfare. It has become away of life. And yes I fully support welfare for those who can't work for various reasons. The thing is that the welfare is too close to the minimum wage. Second the 'incentive' to get off welfare is to soft.
I know this will arc up a few here. But tax payers want the government to get value for the taxes they pay. Paying someone not to work isn't value for money.
Bruce,another great post! I have highlighted the comments that I most agree with. Welfare has become a way of life,and many seem to believe that it is their "right" to do nothing,and get paid for it! There is no disputing that people like Ric,who have served in the armed forces,and suffered disabilities,are deserving of our support,but I absolutely disagree with those who bleat "There's no jobs",as there are thousands of jobs waiting to be filled.Cheers
I am an NDIS client as well. I have employed a cleaner, luckily she lives in our village, now, If I offered her just $7 per hour, that seems to be the agreed figure for people to work for that GN forum members agree upon, do you think she would work for me. I also today employed a mowing contractor, He has to travel 2 hours round trip to come and do the lawn, plus it is a 2 hour lawn, do you think, he would come for just $7 per hour. You people have to have a sincere look at your values, and beliefs, before you make comments on what people have to charge per hour to successfully get to live on, survive with and hopefully make a little bit of profit out of their hourly rate. $7 per hour are slave wages, and you guys know it, and wouldn't work for that money yourselves.
