Hi guys/gals, Over the last few months due to NBN cut-off and limited access, I have not been able to post much on the GN's Forums. Whilst many would be pleased at my absence on many pages - it means I have extreme difficulty in viewing many articles (mainly in Just Joking) due to there only being a web link provided. I know it is a lot easier to just send a link rather than doing a copy and paste or re-type but; it occurred to me that there must be many Grey Nomads that also don't have the ability to download links to view an article that may or maybe not interest them (but they can't choose to decide if it is worth the trouble/cost). Obviously, a U-tube or Tik Tok video cannot be uploaded in other than a web-link, but many jokes, etc could be copied/ re-typed.
Would it be possible for posters to paint a word picture of an link, so those with limited data access can determine the worth of downloading?
I will always be lurking when Network coverage allows.

I provide a link plus a short description ... in text form. AISI, there is no need to provide pictures in most cases.
It seems to me that I have seen you post jokes in picture form rather than plain text. Now you are concerned about download limits. Can you see the contradiction?

I wasn't complaining just observing, about the ability to download links - When you provide a description of what the link pertains to, it allows all to ascertain worth of downloading data - in my case transcribing link to paper to view when facilities allow.

I've often wondered if your question warrants its own thread in the Hints and Tips section. I'm always looking for tips, extensions, or scripts which minimise the amount of fluff that goes on in the background. This would be especially important for users of relatively expensive mobile plans.
I miss my old browser of 15 years ago (Opera 9 & 10). In those days I had lots of tricks to cut down on bandwidth sucking garbage, but these days I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle. For example, why do people insist on encapsulating a simple email message in an MS Word doc file? The result is a 30K payload instead of 100 bytes of plain text.

Hi Possum,
Not sure if you are referring to the mp4 videos I post or not. I wish that I could just upload the file and people could just click and play, but the system makes me choose the file (under 10mb) to upload and posts it as link.
In order to view it then, you have to download it to your own device to play, sometimes not possible on an iPad etc. My ideal post would be so you can play it on the GN's website, not sure if it will happen though.
Most of the videos I receive are by email, so easy to share with my contacts etc by the same method, but not here. If there is a better solution, let me know please.
Cheers Bob

Yes had similar problems when I first started accessing this board via the mobile version because there is nothing to distinguish potentially useful posts from copied and pasted garbage.
Didn't take long to figure out that some members never post anything except second hand pap so they could be safely ignored and save a lot of bandwidth. Same goes with posts that are just a link without even the courtesy of a descriptive title

Bob, I don't know of a better way, and I'm too old an computer illiterate to try and work out a way, especially with NBN stuffing up my well ordered way of doing things. That was really my intention of the thread - could there be a better way?
If you Techies also have problems there is no way.
I wasn't being critical of you by the way - I'm just pissed off that I can't get easy access.

Only upload small 640 or thereabouts wide pixel images when that's all is needed for the subject.

Have to say a lot of the second hand pap is pretty entertaining, a bit like this composite of Paula White and Kenneth Copeland, what a pair of fruitcakes.

This is the image resizer I use, free download and easy to work with.
Does that work on videos? I have had some real funny ones that are over the 10 mb limit, so I can't upload them.
Cheers Bob
G'Day Bob, as far as I'm aware only good for JPEG images.

No offense taken Possum, but I was thinking that when you upload a photo, the system gives me the choice to insert or remove, but with videos there is no such choice.
So if I could insert them, everyone would be able to see online without having to download it.
What do you reckon Cindy?, is it possible that they can be viewed online.
