Apples finished in about june, you do know they keep most of this years harvest ( gassed with regulated oxygen and carbon dioxide). The ones you bought are probably last years as they sell them until they are gone or are going bad. It's usually only the new varieties that are fresh because not so many growing them. Now they are fiddling with oranges and mandarins, their skin is like leather and have a taste of decay. Have you noticed they do not put up the fresh signs anymore on fruit & veg.

At that price I would expect that they would come with a warranty.

So what if apples are expensive.
We have had more asparagus & blueberries than would be prepared to admit. Although haven't seen any white asparagus this year.
I even had the fortune of making a few batches of tomato sauce from cherry tomatoes at $2.99 to $4.99 kg & froze, didn't bother to skin them, & got a pile of basil very cheap. Normally use Roma tomatoes & skin them.
Just seeing if Kensington mangoes get cheap enough to make some batches of ice cream. Need some oranges, limes, double cream & a touch of salt..... & Grand Marnier to taste! Making your own ice cream is not cheap but it is worth killing for!

Valencia oranges are being picked, a good green grocer will have them but the supermarkets still have old navel stock to sell.

We have had one batch but they were pretty ordinary, but prefer these over Navel.
We found one lot of Blood oranges & they were very good.

Pa! They're not even trying!
In Robinvale, NW Vic, avocados have been around $4.70 for some weeks. I suspect the avocado trees have round-the-clock security guards.
I *love* avocados but I wonder who is stupid enough to pay $4.70 for one!?

Evening Peter.
Perhaps more to the point a lack of young Aussies willing to get their hands dirty.
We never used to be afraid of a bit of hard work.

I bet the exports got picked and sent overseas though.

Here in Tassie we think paying $3 or $4 per kilo is normal in a supermarket.
However, if you are prepared to take 2nd grade, where the size/shape might vary, $1.50 is the norm. Get them from the out-of-town fruit/veg stands.
Juice apples are even cheaper.
At this time of year they are all out of the cool-store.
