The Federal Court has ordered Volkswagen AG to pay $125 million in penalties, after it declared by consent that Volkswagen breached the Australian Consumer Law by making false representations about compliance with Australian diesel emissions standards.
That is a $2,192 fine for each of the 57,000 vehicles imported
Not sure what will happen to these vehicles in the future
The article did mention that without the false readings, they would have exceeded the NOx emissions limits allowed in Australia

I think the fine is to act as a deterrent although their (VW) deceit did allow them to move 57,000 units that should not have been sold in Australia.

This fine, plus all the other the fines from other countries, concerning diesel gate, was certainly a deterrent to VW, Possum
I think that I read a while ago, that VW cars are going electric, and that 2026 (or thereabouts), will be the year of their last internal combustion engine
