On top of a cricket pitch, blighted and blessed in unequal measure by my sons' erratic bowling and batting, there now stands an emergency hospital.
Garran Oval's just a six-stitcher throw from where one of them -- and their sister -- was born.
But now it's a wonder of pop-up modern medicine, something you might see in the aftermath of a natural disaster in the Pacific or some God-forsaken nation ravaged by a receding civil war.
But for a whole bunch of miserable sorts, the kind of planning that spawned the Garran Oval multi-million-dollar makeover represents a wasteful splurge on old-timers who were going to die sometime soon anyway.

Hi Dorian
A good read, so thanks for that
I respectfully reply, on behalf of myself, to the bunch of miserable sorts, mentioned in the above article, you have put up
Dear Sirs/Madams/Cretins
I respectfully agree to disagree with your point of view, that during this recent Coronavirus threat, the economy should have come before the oldies
You may not be aware, that if it was not for us oldies, some of you youngish people, may never have been born, therefore out of respect to us oldies, try and act like a human being, and stop moaning
As an oldie I am aware that fortunes have been lost, by some of the youngish people, due to the economic and social lockdown
You may not be aware that some oldies have also lost, a fortune, due to the economic and social lockdowns
I respectfully point out, that while a person is youngish and healthy, they have a chance of regaining their fortunes, us oldies will never have that chance
You will always have the right, to agree to disagree with my views Just in case you are too young to realise, I shall point out to you You also have the right, to agree to disagree with your own views, at any time you wish to return to Australia
Have a nice day
Not personally knowing any miserable sorts, I can only assume they will now be going to live in an economy first/health last country, as soon as they are able to travel
Note that to my way of uneducated/grammar thinking I have always assumed that a Cretin is someone, who was born with a functioning brain, but refuses to see the big picture, when their own picture is in front of them

It's a lot of the older people volunteering keeping society functioning. The invisible unpaid work! Let's call a spade a spade. Slave labour!
Looking at an isolated case, in our block of 15 units it is us oldies who do all the work, putting bins out, gardening, organise building repairs (new windows, balustrade, roof tiles for storm damage, new arch bars.......), yesterday I put in 2 new washers for someone & cleaned up for 2 hours on council land after council gardeners had been through as they are too lazy to do a half decent job.
Last week a renter asked if I could clean the laundry.
Dear ......, sorry I haven't got back to you as I had a migraine. We do not have a news letter as I am one of the few volunteers around here who does everything and have not got time for additional work. A year ago I cleaned the laundry including cleaning the pipes on the walls, door grills and polished tub. For 31 years I have volunteered and installed shelves, clothes lines, painted the entire laundry and cleaned countless times. Regards, ...... (We have our washing machine in our own unit)
Ok they are renters, but there is zero effort to do anything. They can't even put the correct waste in the appropriate bin.
It's the people with walking frames propping up society!

The Tulip Crash of 1637 came about because the young people couldn't handle money.
It all started a few years earlier with the plague. A lot of old people died thus freeing up capital for inheritance. The young didn't know what to spend their new found wealth on. Tulips seems a good way to make a fast dollar. Then it all went pear shaped!
Plague, 2020, millions of old die, inheritance, party, even bigger crash!
