I have heard of people using an "R" clip on their hitch. Found one on the road the other month, and have been using it on the padlock point on the hitch, but don't really see the reason for it. Maybe it will deter someone from tampering with the hitch handle, otherwise I see it as unnecessary. The hitch already has a safety lock, and this is just a lock on the lock.

yep belt and braces type of thing but the small spring that holds the latch on the couple in are prone to braking so the r clip is just a backup

I use a small padlock. Serves the same purpose and gives a little bit of security.

cjt55 not sure but i think i read somewhere that you aren't supposed to have them locked when on the road . something about being able to disconnect in the case of an accident .Could be totally wrong though .

We use a small padlock - more a visual deterrent than security.

I use a red lynch pin attached to the A frame with a red painted chain.
For me its only purpose is that the chain hanging down reminds me that I probably forgotten to clip the hitch into the locked position.
I use similar red painted bath chains on the pins in the spring bar latches of the WDH. Mainly so that I don't loose them or mischievous passers by don't nick them.
My break safe shackle is painted red also ... so I don't forget it either.

Cupie, that's a good idea. Do you see red, when you have forgotten one ?

My previous c.vans all had a hole for this clip, as does my work trailer, but my newer 93' mod. c,van just has a a knob of steel jutting out on the hitch with a raised piece of metal on the lever. So cannot actually put a clip there, like I did in the old days. Might be tempted to get a new hitch, but this current lever is highly sprung, so cannot be held open.
