I wonder how many on this forum have a problem with the paint peeling off the checker plate panels on their vans. I was advised last week that there are 1600 outstanding claims against the insurance company who at this stage are refusing to address the problem and it could be years before anything is done. Our van is only 2 years old and we wouldn't be able to sell it even if we wanted to. The ACCC have advised that they can only mediate with the company we purchased the van from but it is not hard to guess what the outcome of that will be.
I would be pleased if anyone else with the problem could send me a PM and advise if they have has any luck with getting it fixed.

I am not claiming against my insurance.
The claims are against the checker plate providers insurance company by the affected caravan manufacturers.

I think that anyone thinking that a painted surface at the front of a caravan will not chip, must have a chip in their head.
The only solution is to replace it with vinyl chequered material.

Or they could stop crying, buy a spray-can of black paint, and touch it up.Spare me.....it's not as if the wheels fell off,or the chassis broke. Or,like me,just leave the checker plate unpainted.Cheers

It has nothing to do with being chipped from stones etc.
In 2016 there were faulty batches of black checker plate supplied to numerous caravan manufacturers.

So if the paintwork on your beloved ute started peeling off, you would just accept it and leave it unpainted

Friend has the AL ( Natural Colour) Checker Plate along the lower side of his van, so no paint problem. But with a Black Plastic 15mm x 15mm L shaped cover lower edge of the CP and under neath the van, there was no silicon between the top edge of the L cover and the checker plate and because of the uneven surface of the checker plate, water was rotting out his frame.
Suggest if you have Checker plate on the side of your van you check that its sealed correctly.

He used to carry on in the same manner on another forum, but they obviously. got sick of him as his membership has been terminated
An ignore button would be a useful addition to this forum.

I was in the aluminium industry for almost two decades and sold hundreds of tonnes of treadplate. Aluminium treadplate should be left unpainted as the main purpose of the produced is tread plate, ie to be scratched and marked. I use a couple of pieces as jacking plate/leveling ramp.

& don't put on too much etch primer. Read the instructions.
Also it takes about a week for top coat paint to fully harden.

It may now be difficult short of removing the offending panels and renewing them to do the job properly.
As others have said, a proper etch primer is required to get good adhesion to the aluminium in the first place as well as cleaning before hand.
It is more than likely this is the reason the paint is peeling as this wasn't done correctly to start with.
Even with powdercoating, I have had instances of that peeling off because the pretreatment etch and cleaning processes were short cut.
To now repaint what you have, you would need to remove all the old paint and start the clean, etch and paint process from scratch which maybe harder than replacing the panels.
If you repaint. use good quality stuff like an epoxy based etch and preferably a two pack paint to obtain some longevity as our vans cop a bit of a hiding from stones and sand and the like when travelling.
Hope it works out for you.

why would you blame the moderator some people do not read the post or think they read the post. I maybe wrong was the OP asking about paint peeling not being chipped ?

Why do they continue to build walls out of a flooring material ?......could never work it out.
Prime with Etch primer first ? It helps paint adhere. Hey guys . Hope Im not one of jacks ?? Lol https://www.bunnings.com.au/dy-mark-325g-etch-metal-primer_p1580553
