I currently use gregorys touring atlas of Australia, paper maps, camps 9, & wikicamps for my travels.
Is there an app available that is simply maps of Australia with a good zoom ability.
I am looking for a replacement for paper maps. The apps I've looked at have symbols for camps, dump points, etc. all over them, hiding town names or complete roads.
I don't want trip planners, trip logs etc just something simple to look at.
I like to look for alternatives to highways & major roads.
Is there a simple map app available? I don't mind if I have to pay for it. I use an 8" tablet

An interesting question. I will be waiting in anticipation for the responses.
Might be something wrong with my brain, because I need large scale paper maps to get a real appreciation of where I am going. I plan the trip on a broad scale with the large (state) paper map & then a more detailed plan using paper area maps (like the Cartographer series).
As I drive I use electronic maps like GPS, Google Maps & the Maps App on my phones.
It would be nice to be able to do it all on one 'zoomable' map/App

i plan in a similar manner to you.(I like to see the larger picture first). Usually the first thing I do after I set up is crack a tinny & think about the next day.
I find the cartoscope area maps for NSW very good, but you've got to have one (usually available from info centres in NSW)
A mate has hema explorer on his tablet. it is covered in symbols & only zooms down to 1 to 250,000, not good enough to pick up small back roads.

Not sure if this is what your looking for but get maps.me , works all over the world. Download country using wifi but when out and about you don't need wifi.

Like previous posters I'm also a big fan of Maps.me, over the last 2 years I have used it when driving in the absolute middle of nowhere in places like the UAE, Bahrain, Oman and then just recently in South Africa, touch wood I have never been lost yet. My wife is heading off today with her sister on a road trip and she asked me what navigation tool she should use as the Eclipse X hasn't got Sat Nav only the Apple car play/Android system. I downloaded Maps.me onto her Iphone but for some reason car play won't recognise it - Apple probably have some agreement with Google about using only their products or something. The reason I like Maps.me is because as others already mentioned you don't need to have an internet connection.

Gee the Hema products look great and their head office is in easy walking distance from home (not sure that that is a factor though LOL) perhaps its time to replace my bottom of the range Garmin with a real pro set up. Have to wait for some unallocated dividends (or franking credits) to land.

Recently purchased Hema HX1, after having Hema HN6 for many years Both do a great job, with the HX1 you get access to Hema Explorer Cloud Map You can display your tracks, waypoints etc and plan trips. As you zoom in more detail is available
I mainly use ExploreOz Traveller, an Australian product. As secondary mapping I use Memory Map with the Hema maps installed. All running on my android tablet.

I use electronic and paper. Like to have paper for overview.
Also dropped my phone while traveling and had to buy another one.
GPS stopped working and bought a new one of those as well.
Spilt some coffee on the paper map and it still works!

Again thanks for the replys.
I downloaded maps me app & downloaded Queensland & Brisbane.
It remains clear when zooming in, even offline. It is clear when zooming in on towns, which is good.
The only minus for me is it doesn't show kilometers on the map. There is a scale bar at the bottom, that helps.
I'll work with it & see how it goes

For off-line mapping I use the OSMAN app for android
FREE and has maps from all over the world
Difficult to use as GPS but detail when zooming is pretty good

Available screen real-estate often dictates usefulness of larger scale digital maps not matter which app you settle on using. It's the main reason so many people still use paper for overviews. I use my phone and in-car GPS for navigation and an 8" Samsung for planning and overview. I've also been places (near Cameron Cnr) where every digital device and app (inc the latest HEMA app) and paper maps were incorrect at some point on a 100km leg and signage was the only resort. In case you are interested, most errors related to tracks once open for exploration but now deemed private roads.
