I'm just planning our family trip up through Qld. We're hoping to head out north-west from the Gold Coast and see some sights through the outback as we head to Townsville. Our first stop is Roma. We've gone through Roma before out to Charleville and up through to Barcaldine. This time I'm wondering about heading north from Roma to Emerald, and then from Emerald straight up to Charters Towers. My two questions are:
1) Are the roads okay on these routes?
2) Are there things/places to stop and see, particularly for our children? Any favourite places?

Very dry/dusty Barcaldine way at the moment we were out there last Month.
