When travelling through the city of Toowoomba in S.E. Qld, will you use the new billion $$$ bypass or will you prefer to still ascend or descend the old highway over the range that will see you travelling through this busy city.
Unless one needs to call in to Toowoomba, I think I will use the bypass.

If I'm heading north-west I'll probably use it but unless I'm on a criss-cross tour, I rarely head through T'wmba now anyway. That isus more to do with my location than any love/hate of T'wmba. It looks promising for those people that do the current range crossing as it removes all the city and suburban traffic routes.

Hi John....having driven many times up and down the Toowoomba Range in a 63 ton B-Double,I am sure that most truckies will opt to use the by-pass,even though the toll is ridiculously high.($23?) However,as you suggest,most caravanners probably are planning to visit Toowoomba city and will choose to climb the hill.Cheers

Yep... I'll probably use it. Don't usually stop at Twba except for a coffee break at Picnic Point. I'll find somewhere else I suppose.
The $2.30 for a car pulling a van (using my current Linkt beeper) seems good value.
Be interesting to see how steep it is. The old Tollbar has a few steep bits.
Just have to familarise myself with the on & off locations on the range top in particular (edit .. downloaded a map from the Gov site - gives easy access to both the Dalby & Goondi highways .. funny that)) . Wonder if it's on google maps & my GPS. Need to check it out before the next trip up that way.

Wonder what it will cost for car n caravan. Saw it being built and looked scarily high. Think i will stick to the old way or go up the road just past gatton that goes to clifton

That 6.5 (I've read 6 somewhere) is a lot more attractive than the current road at 10.5 and it's minus the curves.

If I remember correctly
In 2014, within walking distance of the tourist information centre, was a small bakery, which sold mince meat type pies, with a mushy peas topping
I would like to have some of those pies again

Even at $23 for a b- double or 2-30 for a car on the bypass it would have to be a saving going that way when you consider you dont have to potentially stop at 20 odd sets of lights going through Toowoomba. Time saving estimated at upto 30 minutes and reduced fuel would surely be worth more than the tolls.

At $23.00 for a truck based motorhome it will cost more to go up the new bypass than the cost of fuel from Brisbane to Toowoomba. I will try it during the three month free period, will use the old road when tolls in place, with less trucks on the old road may even be able to keep in 4th gear with out having to slow and use 2nd. Yes a bit longer, but are we really in a race.

Those motor homes that attract a truck toll on the other toll roads might well be charged the $23. Could be worthwhile checking this out though as I would have thought that the intent was to charge large Commercial vehicles the greater fee. Nomads with a motor home will probably be aware of how Toll operators rate them.
The toll fee of $23 might be close to the fuel consumption for the 126km Bris to Twba trip if you use 15L/100k and fuel is around $1.45/L.
Of course the (assumed) fuel savings by taking the less steep second range crossing may be another factor if the distances are similar, but then you will not be stopping and starting in traffic at the many traffic lights thru Twba.
I'll certainly be taking the second crossing, after having been up the old toll bar innumerable times .. including mornings where the top section & Twba streets were covered in thick fog. Scary. It'll be a nice change too

The hassle for some truckies is access. To get on it, my brother-in-law has to drive almost to Warwick to gain access but the cost is worked out on $1 for every traffic light that they don't have to go through. For those familiar with Toowoomba, it will be nice to drive down James St without sharing it with numerous semi-trailers.
