Just wondering has any one travelled through Spain,France,Germany,Italy,Croatia,Switzerland,Netherlands and UK just wondering about campsites,border crossings and general tips we want to hire a sprinter or small motorhome two people in there summer already been travelling in Aust for six years we would like to do os before we get to old cheers

Yes we did it in 2007, a while ago now.
Tavelled from Germany(started at Munich), Czech, Poland (Auschwitz) then back to Germany onto Spain then returning to Munich, all in 6 weeks(yep I like driving). We did it at the end of the season in Oct/Nov, yes was getting a litttle cool but gas heater in M/home was great. We free travelled the entire time as most c/parks were closed because of the season, a few were open but it became a pain trying to find them, so free camping it was. We had no problems but were very carefull on where we stopped, filling up with water was a bit of a problem but we managed. Asking for water in most of these countries was like asking to borrow your wife for the night???
Would I do it again, absolutely, but maybe not so much driving( 1 or 2 countries slowly), yes we did far tooooo much and only saw little of each place, but as I said I love driving through the countrysides.

We have relatives in Germany. Spent time in Italy with & without them. We were there 10, 11 & 14, did mainly Italy & France. You will not get a camp spot in summer in southern Italy. As all the northerners come for the warmth.
One trip we finish the southern part of the holiday in the Dolomites in northern Italy after driving up from Pompeii for a month & prior to that a few weeks down the east to the heel of Italy. The camp grounds were 1/3 full. The following week we were told every camp ground was fully booked.
It would be horrible travelling around in tourist season there & you have to go to camp grounds for the night. No free camping.

Do the cities by train as one part of your trip. Do the country by motorhome. About the biggest city would be Verona in Italy, there is a lovely camp ground on the north on the town overlooking it. Cremona is a lovely place. Also a lot of camp grounds are extremely tight so stick with a small camper.

After 10 years we are still doing it and at the end of the last trip we bought a new motorhome to keep doing it. Been from Turkey to Morocco to Iceland and still many gaps to fill in.
I guess you are aware that you can only spend 90 days in 180 days in the Schengen Zone, which includes all the countries you mention and about 15 more as well

Well maybe not England and Ireland which allow 180 and 90 days respectively. You can also duck into other non-schengen countries provided you keep track of the times in schengen zone. Nowadays they take over stays VERY seriously

Thanks for the info its good to know the zones so we can plan the trip we were also considering to buy one and sell a motor home for the trip how do register is it like in aust where you need a home addresss thanks

Most EU countries only allow citizens to register and insure vehicles so we have an agreement with the company we bought the motorhomes from to store it there between trips and have it ready to go when we arrive. Germany makes it easy to start and stop registration and you get to keep the same rego number year after year

Alternative used by a couple of other forum members is to enlist the aid of friends or relatives to own the vehicle on their behalf
