We have an older type Hayman Reese W.D.H. BIG HEAVY BRUTE.
I have been driving around with this Tow ball hitch still attached to the Cruiser.
The tow ball hitch would project approx. 25 to 30 cm from the rear bumper bar.
Soooo .... It is legal to drive with Tow ball hitch still on the Cruiser whilst partaking in just city driving.????
Thanks

The trailer ball mount can be left in the hitch receiver as long as it does not obscure the licence plate. To prevent theft Hayman Reese have a Hitch Pin Lock available which replaces the standard pin and clip. Alternatively you can remove the trailer ball mount and store it in a secure place and use a Hayman Reese hitch box cover to provide a neat finish on the towbar and at the same time stop dirt and water readily getting into the hitch receiver.

Pretty sure you can sill drive the vehicle with the WDH still attached. If parked and someone barks their shins on it, you may find it removed and left on the bonnet. Saw this happen one day and the marks on the bonnet definitely would not polish out.

Always a good plan to install a lockable hitch pin.

In some States it is illegal to have a removable appendage in place when not being used.

The Australian Design Rule 42.9.1 states:
"No vehicle shall be equipped with any object or fitting, not technically essential which protrudes from any part of the vehicle so that it is likely to increase the risk of bodily injury to any person."

Its illegal to drive a vehicle with a bicycle rack attached when not carrying a bicycle.
The same goes for towing mirrors when not towing anything.

O/O.
I have small lockwood lock securing the hitch to the vehicle.
Not sure if the answers here tells me if it is illegal or not.
we live in Logan City... Brisbane. Qld.
I guess that the attached hitch is also a sort of protection if some one should run into my rear end.

To answer your original question again Jay, The attached Hitch is not essential when not towing, so it is illegal (as per Kebbins post) in Australia to leave in place when not towing. You also leave yourself open to some sort of action if someone is injured by it.
Other rules in 42.9.1 cover the design of the bumper bars, to prevent people being hurt if they come in contact with them.
Is the lock thru the securing pin or is IT the securing pin?

I bashed one with my shin decades ago. It was sticking out further than I realised. It was so painful, can't repeat what I said, & still have the hole to show for it.
If you can remove them please do so.

Basically anything that protrudes from your vehicle that isn't being used is illegal & regarded as a danger to others.
If in doubt take it to a police station, get them to have a look at it & find out first hand. Regulations vary from State to State.

I'm sure most Coppers won't even bother but you will have some that will.

Can't see anyone getting pinged by the copper for this one considering many vehicles have tow balls attached which aren't removable.
All you would have to say is, I'm on my way to pick up my caravan. Copper can't argue with that.
Like WAWT, cracked a few shins on them but granted, haven't done that in many years now. Maybe they used to stick out further back in the day or maybe I've just learned how to walk around a car without running into it.
cheers Brett
