Unemployment: at 4.6% it's less than the Victorian average of 4.8%.
Drugs: But as it's the third largest city in Victoria then clearly its drug problem is well below average.
Do your homework before pontificating DD.
And yes, there is still plenty of gold in the area but you have to put in the time and effort to find it.

Jay & Dee, don't know whether you've visited Ballarat before but I'd highly recommend it if you're touring in the south. Can't guarantee you will find a nugget of course, but it is a very pleasant town and highly significant in Australia's history. Enjoy all it has to offer.

HI tony,
Yes Mate, we spent a number of days in Ballarat.
Visiting all the tourist attractions. Also spent a few days in Bendigo which has some great old buildings etc.
Did not go looking for the Gold, as we do not have one of those detectors.
Anyway getting to bloody old to bend down and go panning. Mr Arthritus has buggered that.
Going from Brisbane to S.Aust some time this month, so may revisit both towns.
The main feature on the G.N forum page is Gold ...Gold... Gold.
Way sown South South to BALLARAT where the gold rush is on.
Good luck to the happy guy who found the El Dorado.
Might try my luck on the way home from S. Aust later this year.
Are you heading to the Gold Rush in Ballarat.?
Jay&Dee
Its also a massive sprawling regional city not much different than Melbourne.
Yeah, right. Melbourne's population has just gone past 5 million, Ballarat has 100,000. Very similar - most definitely not!
Ballarat is beautiful country city, easy to get around, and has some of the finest historic architecture in Oz.
It's long been said by experts that there is still a lot more gold in them thar' hills than has ever been uncovered since day one.

It also has a high unemployment rate & a huge illegal drug problem just like Melbourne, which also has some nice historic buildings.

Take a tip mate, have a look at life the other way around, try a glass half-full perspective rather than half-empty and you might feel better.
