Hey all,
you've probably seen these dohickeys floating around on social media of late.
they seem to be everywhere.
Now I know you can't use this on your van but I figure most of you are towing with a 4wd of some sort and would probably spend as much time up on the roof as I do.
You might even have ducks disease like me too
I was about to pull the trigger on one with a work mate when the guys got in touch and asked if i wanted a freebie for review on my utube channel.
Not being completely stupid, I said of course.
free is better than 50 bucks any day.
Not much to be told about these. If you've seen them, you kinda know all you need to know.
Very robust little buggers and a simple design.
I had the chance to take it away camping with some mates (who weigh a bit more than me) for a proper test.
Overall the responses were positive with a few small improvements.
grip tape on the surface for one.
As a short ass though, at 5'4 this thing is brilliant.
Yes, I can stand on the wheels or back of my seat but this thing makes getting up on top that bit safer.
I originally thought they were $35aud and for that I thought, why not.
That turned out to be $US though, which makes them 50 Oz.
Not sure about you, but that's getting to a price where I start to consider do I really need it, for what you get.
I'm curious about what others think about the pricing.
Happy to report, these work on all doors of the Paj and even the rear one
On the side doors, it tends to tilt up a little because of the angled panel work inside the door frame . You don't want to be standing up there too long with this angle as it tends to start to hurt your feet a little. Still, not before you get what you need to get done.
For those of you with big bank accounts and bigger 4wds, it works on the land cruiser 200 as well.
to be clear, this was sent to me for free for the review the same as the other youtube reviewers and they do have an affiliate program where you get a finders fee for sales from those who use your link. Like the one under my video on youtube.
That said, I've also spotted them on ebay for around 20 bucks odd.This ones an Aussie seller.....so it says

Very timely. Had to change vehicle recently and no longer have the convenient 100 series rear tailgate to stand on so been thinking about how to easily reach the roof rack. This could solve my problem. Thanks.
Out of interest you said "a few small improvements" but then only mentioned one..grip tape...what else?
Re pricing..I'm a cheapskate so I'll be checking out the ebay option. Reckon $50 is a bit much.

After further investigation that's the conclusion I reached too. Would be too hard to lift stuff up there whilst precariously perched on one foot and hanging onto the rack with one hand. Decided to go for a wheel mounted stand.

It just doesn't get me high enough. I'm taller standing on the top of the wheel.
The new one gets me higher again.
You're not hiking stuff up onto the roof using this thing. That said, I used to hike a 4wd wheel up onto the roof over my shoulder of a lifted delica without it, So I can't be too hypercritical of others lifting stupidly heavy things onto their roof.
Gravity obviously makes this much easier to get down

That's nothing to the way I have to climb around on the vehicle to reach roof without it
At 5'4 , you either climb or get used to looking up.
Seriously though, If you watch the video, you will see Adam try it originally and how cautious he is to start.
After he's had a few minutes, you'll see another shot of him standing up there waving his hands around and standing on the one foot.
It doesn't take long to trust it and get used to it.
If your balance and confidence in such things isn't high, its probably not for you.
The only other alternative to the other step shown above, that I can think of is a ladder really and I can't stick one of those i my door.
Unless someone can point something out. I'm interested if there is something out there.

Your choice donmonkey i just think we are on grey nomads and i am not sure anyone fitting that description should be using that thing. Just my opinion

I still feel like I'm 16 :) even when I see the grey hair looking back at me in the mirror.
I wouldn't ask my 80 year old father to get up on it but I wouldn't be asking him to throw stuff up on the roof anyway.
At the end of the day, life is about choices and I just like to share what's out there and let everyone make up their own mind.

Now, I haven't seen these one in person and can't give you any guidance on quality etc, but they look pretty similar.
Whilst it's nice to get a little kicker, I'd prefer to be up front and let you know about other options also.

good idea but a bit small to stand comfortably.
After further investigation that's the conclusion I reached too. Would be too hard to lift stuff up there whilst precariously perched on one foot and hanging onto the rack with one hand. Decided to go for a wheel mounted stand.
