Apparently Australia's diesel reserves are only good for 21 days should supply from overseas be interrupted. This started me thinking about the "what if". What if I am at the other side of the country and the proverbial hits the fan and fuel is rationed? How will I cope with that? I have sufficient fuel on board for 2000 km range (no towing), so provided I keep it topped up I should be ok for most scenarios. What are your thoughts?

Good point Greystone,
Perhaps this is the time when we seriously embrace electric vehicles and therefore do not depend on fossil fuel for transport
and are not at the mercy of oil producers.
For the sceptics, there are electric buses that are in operation somewhere around the world, UK maybe.
Therefore the argument about not being able to tow with an electric vehicle is nonsense.

It is all very fine to promote Electric Vehicles but I do not think it will make it any more reliable in the long run, there is a reluctance to build any more Power Stations, yes there is lots of money going into Solar and Wind Generation but you cannot store electricity but you can store Diesel or Petrol, think whatever mode you have a Bicycle will be a good backup.

Have not even considered this. Everyone in australia will be in the same boat. i am not even concerned. If we stay in one place a few months, so be it. No amount of worrying by us will make any difference To the outcome. go and travel and enjoy.

If the country runs out of fuel keeping travelling will the least of our worries, more concern about getting basic supplies of food etc, the supermarket shelves would soon be bare when the trucks stop.

My personal opinion only If there is a lack of fuel, then it must go to essential services, and I would consider myself (as a traveller), to be at the very bottom of the list The only sensible plan I can think of, is to sit tight, help others where we can, if we are not locals then tell them what skills we have, and offer to volunteer our services

I heard on ABC a few years ago that once you take out of the equation all the fuel sitting in downstream tanks, petrol stations & vehicles, on farms & big users own storage etc, we really only have about 9 days of fuel.
We are supposed to have 90 days reserve according to an international protocol.
As far as fuel for food. For 1 calorie of food on the table it takes 9 calories of fossil fuel to get it there & all associated packaging, fertilizers etc!
I can only carry an additional 50 litres, so I can get from Norseman to Ceduna with a few small side trips. After that I walk!
I have two plans in place if we run out of fuel...
Plan A ................. Stay where I am and conserve what I have left.
Plan B ................. Refer to plan A..................................................Peter.

Do I have a back up plan?, it is not a big one, but always have 2000 lts of diesel ways ready in case, if their is a problem. If when have a country wide shortage, will be extra careful, and we will use our bikes to get to town. Food wise we have our own meat, no veges as no real rain, just surviving on clean bore water.
