Just a simple and cheap fire lighter if you are in need of them. Home brand cotton balls about $2 for 200, home brand petroleum jelly for a couple of dollars also, which will last forever.
Smear some petroleum jelly on the cotton ball, the more you put on the longer it will burn and just use as a fire starter.
Short video for example, but was conscious of not having a big video file that wouldn't upload so i stopped it a bit short, but works well.
Good bushmen of course will just rub 2 sticks together, but this is a good standby ........cheers Bob
Yep !! I have kept my cotton wool balls in a jar soaking in meto.
Have been doing it for years.
Your method bares a try

Someone many moons back told me dried out tea bags work well too Bob. I have never tried it as I can't be around smoke.

Corn chips also work well (as long as you're not hungry)

A fairly controversial subject but questions need to be answered.
Many bushfires are definitely caused by recreational campers.
Why would you need a campfire on a day above 25 degrees?
1. Do I need this fire to cook a meal on? Probably not.
2. Do I need this fire for camp lighting? Probably not.
3. Do need this fire to stay warm? Probably not.
4. Do I need to burn the Aussie Bush? Definitely not.
5. Is lighting a campfire just a habit? It probably is.
6. Is it any wonder that popular RV free camps are stripped of vegetation? Not really.
7. Will firewood in the bush become scarce in future? Absolutely.
I rest my case & await the following stream of abuse.
Cheers Judy

Agree Olive Oil. I have been at Greens Lake Nth Central VIC many times during summer and even on 40c days some people light a fire and sit around it. STUPID. I avoid fires when I can as can't be around smoke.

Don't want to upset the Greenies or you Doug who can't be around smoke, but men need to stand around something with a drink in their hand talking about football, caravans, tugs and their wives, etc.
The best conversation starter bar none, but most of the time it's in the cooler weather for a bit of warmth as well.
Should be more opposition to the log trucks carting sticks up to Bunbury to be sent to china for woodchips, some only 300 mm thick or old growth Jarrah destroyed.

we burn half a cubic meter a day when camping over chrismas, we have the wood delivered (standing order for the last 10 years at least), it is all burnt in a camp cookbox that feeds up to 50 people (normally about 30) and supply continuous hot water, wood fired pizzas ect
cheers

The best conversation starter is to lift the bonnet of your truck as soon as you arrive at camp stand there peering in to the motor regions - Within two minutes there will be a mob of old fella's in thongs, beer in hand telling you that, they know what the problem is.

Hey Bob have they lifted the requirements for permits in Fridgetown yet. Working up in Perth and home at weekend and would like to have a small fire when I get home for marshmallows.

Like everything else, there are those who act responsibly and those who don't.
I enjoy a camp fire and will always light one when and where it is legal to do so, sometimes I use it to cook but most times just to relax.
