Drove past a completely destroyed caravan this morning about 10 k north of Rolleston QLD. (Between Roma and Emerald) Don't know any details except it happened yesterday. It was right in the middle of a section of bitumen road speed marked 80 k due to rough road which was quite rough with sunken parts near a foot deep.
As much as you see pictures posted online, it really was chilling to see one in the flesh. It instantly made a better driver of me. I hope those involved were ok.

I've seen the aftermath a couple of times, and once a caravan travelling two or three vehicles ahead of me got the wobbles and self destructed in front of my eyes. Makes you realise how fragile they really are - just plywood and plastic mostly. It's a very sobering sight to be sure, seeing someone's pride and joy reduced to matchwood and their possessions spread all over the road. Hope no-one was hurt and they're back on the road again soon.

There was not much left of the ones I saw
It is a sobering fact, that I have seen them, mainly on a straight section of highway

Most are a case of undulating roads, wind, speed and the biggest
the tail wagging the dog.
I've seen a few off road where it's like a bomb went off and
the van plus contents are spread over over 100+ mts
not a pretty sight.

What some fail to realise . Is the van suspension is no where designed to take bumps etc like the tow vehicle . We have OFTEN been passed by cars towing vans on dusty metal roads . ( yea thanks !). To see through van window . Things bouncing around. Consider the van ! We travel in motorhome, can feel, see and hear things rocking around if conditions dont suit !!

I once travelled in the van for about half an hour while the wife towed, just because I was interested how noisy and how much movement there was. It was quite a sobering experience, and as Aus-Kiwi says - van suspension is nothing like car suspension! I treat the van with a lot more respect when going over bad roads now.
(And yes, I know it's not legal, but let's just keep it between ourselves eh! )

The movie "The Long, Long Trailer" has a scene about just how much the inside of a trailer (American for caravan) moves around while being towed.
(Lucille Ball decides to cook dinner so as to be ready when they pull up that afternoon.)
