hi we are new to Grey Nomads and after some advise. We are travelling from Darwin back home to Perth and going to stay in Kununurra overnight and would like to know if there are any safe places to stay between Kununurra and Broome, we have heard there are problems in Fitzroy crossing. We normally do about 700klms a day if there is nothing to stop for. Appreciate any advise. Thanks

Mary's Pool is 467km from Kununurra, its a large free camp on the river and is very safe and very popular. You will definitely have company at this time of year. If you want to go further then the Fitzroy River Lodge caravan park at Fitzroy Crossing is a very nice caravan park and we have never felt the slightest bit unsafe there. If you have time the Geike Gorge cruise near Fitzroy Crossing is excellent and one of the better priced gorge tours anywhere.

Never had any problems at Fitzroy Crossing, Stayed at the Fitzroy River Lodge each time. Spring Creek, Mary Pool, and one or two others along that way.
In fact travelled that route both ways a few times now and always enjoyed the trip. Lovely country up there.
Wow 700 klicks !! a day that's like being at work.

700kms a day! You're missing most of the points of interest & looking at white lines!
Yes you've passed through there but you've seen nothing at all. Enjoy looking at the bitumen.
Later this year after the main tourist season is over we're taking 3+ weeks to drive from Broome to Darwin in a hired motorhome.
It would probably take you 3 days.

We averaged about 195 km a day & were on the move most days. We need to get out of the car & have plenty of breaks. The most we every did was 400 km, lowest about 50km.
Photos: On the side of the road between Derby & Broome, probably stopped for an hour. Also stopped to walk over the bridges. We'll stop to get a photo of a road, James Price Point. Salt on trees next to road near Sandfire.
Others have mentioned free camp areas like Mary Pool. If you accept caravan parks, the Fitzroy River Lodge CP is very good - and very secure. There is a caravan park by the turnoff to the Bungles.

This was one of the long disused gravel pits not listed on wikicamps. Just have to keep your eyes peeled. Cooling the car off for the night!

We stayed at Halls Creek caravan park last month, had no problems at all and didn't feel unsafe. But its a fairly basic gravel park in the town, surrounded by high fences, certainly not scenic and the surrounding areas can I have heard be a bit noisy on weekends, but the weekday we were there it was quiet. I wouldn't have any issues with staying there again, but personally much prefer Fitzroy Crossing Lodge for a caravan park stop or Mary's Pool for freecamping.

The Fitzroy Crossing Lodge is to the east of the township, across the other side of the river, so it is not really in the town.

The Fitzroy Crossing Lodge is a very different place to Fitzroy Crossing and those that say they know all about stopping there really have not stopped at Fitzroy Crossing. The caravan park at Halls Creek gives a feeling of security behind the security fence. Mind you one time we stopped there it was rowdy close by and about 9pm become quiet and remained so all night. A day or so later while camped at Mary Pools a traveller said to us did you hear that 2 people were stabbed at Halls Creek behind the caravan park and it was the night we were there Sat night and maybe that had something to do with the sudden quiet. Regards Tony

We stopped, free camped in a satellite repeater station . Or some type of gov off road ? A little off the main road. But a good driveway . Parked to the side facing out if anything happened . About 100k out of Fitzroy Crossing .
