I think it is more the problem of the moronic crossing designer - the boom on the EXIT side should not start to close until AFTER the boom on the ENTRY side has fully closed ! This lets any driver accidentally caught after the boom gates start to close, to escape on the other side without any drama - this smash could have easily been prevented.
