we have been considering trading up our Mazda CX 5 for a larger vehicle . It is a 2.5 petrol model and we are towing an AVan weighing around 1200kgs with no plans to tow anything larger . We just returned from a trip to SA and had expected that the car would struggle , but the fuel consumption averaged 10.8 per 100 kms . We took it easy, tried not to rev it too high , just chugging up hills and it performed better than expected . Looking at other SUVs on the market I am now not so sure that others would perform any better and some have a much lower rating for towball weight . Would like to carry a kayak and pushbike in future and have a bit more boot space We dont need a massive tug but a bit of height for ground clearance would be nice .
Does anyone have any suggestions ?

Go to Caravan Council of Australia website to find technical information regarding towing and loading www.caravancouncil.com.au/
