Hello, I am looking for a low wattage clothes iron. On Ebay there are some for sale, supposedly "Phillips" but made in India. They are without steam, which makes them low-wattage, 750 watts. Has anybody had experience with such an iron? Or is there a camping store in Australia that sells them, too? My previous iron was a steam one, 2000 watts, and kept tripping the circuit breaker where my power cord was plugged in. Grateful for ideas. Thanks so much, as I do need to iron just a few items now and then.....

I recall the old flat irons that my Mum used to use.
Just a set of iron wedges that were heated on the wood stove & picked up with a common handle. She kept rotating/changing them as they cooled. Nice & warm standing in front of the wood stove doing the weekly ironing for a family of 7 in Qld's summer heat. Not.
Extra low wattage though.

I still have mum's Shellie iron in working order. No ironing happens in this house hold now. That is best solution.

Neither of us have ironed for over two decades, got better things to do! I tell a lie we did iron on a patch but with hindsight would have been better to relegate clothing to rags!

We rarely iron anymore, and never in the van.
Put what needs to be ironed under the mattress
Only when dressing up for a wedding or a funeral does the iron come out and that's to take out the hanger creases.

SWMBO is addicted to ironing.
Started when I was working, with long sleeved business shirts every day.
Our ironing must be done every Monday morning (while I clean the house). Part of the ritual.
When I was in the Army, I always had the best turned out greens. Beautifully starched & pressed uniform. The test was to stand the trousers up in the corner unsupported. I did the mirror shine on the boots etc., another carry over from my youth where I had to shine my Father's boots & shoes to a mirror finish every Saturday morning.
I think that SWMBO was trying to out do my Mother, who was another ironing fanatic.
We even take an iron when we travel overseas.
I only recently dumped the mini ironing board that we got for the van. Uses the kitchen table instead.
As we stay mainly in CPs, power use is not an issue so the normal Monday morning instrument gets packed, along with the hair drier. Just in case.
Option A: If you have gas put a small but heavy plate on the burner. Then sit an old real iron on that to heat up. It's going to be slow ironing & you may still burn the clothes.
Option B: An opportunity not to waste! You will need new batteries & maybe lithium. New heavy duty wiring. New inverter. New solar panels. An iron will need X amount of heat / wattage to be useful. Probably another 100 years before they design a low energy iron. Calculate how many kWh a typical batch of ironing requires & allow a safety margin, it seems to be a life threatening situation if the ironing can't be completed! & Allow a good safety margin on the hardware.
You have provided 2 ways to finish the ironing, what more can one demand!

Thanks to everybody for your funny replies! And so diverse! I see the light now - better not to iron at all :)

Hi,
Unless I have missed something most irons will work from a standard home 240v power point so should not trip your caravan circuit breaker - may there be a problem with your existing iron - have you tried another ?

She wasnt impressed even after I explained that it intergrated wth the I-Wash , I- Clean and I Cook network ,
Which triggered the I - Nag service which totally destroyed the I - Shag function

Hi ..
By chance, I just came across SWMBO's travel iron. She insists on taking it on overseas travel but never uses it as there is always one in the hotel. Just like most CPs Laundries. It just sits in the pile of 'It was a good idea at the time things' like inflatable clothes hangers. LOL
It is a QANTAS branded 'Wrinkles Away' dual voltage (120/240) with mechanical spray & Steam functions.
Made by 'Courier Luggage P/L Model QF42
120/240VAC ; 60/50Hz ; 800W ; weighs 650grams.
Made in China of course.
Edit ..
It will be coming with us on our next trip down the East Coast.
I do like my nicely ironed shorts, jeans & sports shirts. I just couldn't be seen in my RM moleskins & laughing side boots plus cream akubra, with a wrinkled Thomas Cooke shirt. Almost forgot the Roo Skin Leather Jacket by Paul McCaul. LOL LOL

Um! Sorry all but what is an iron, please
