Newby we are wanting to travel from Coffs Harbour to Western Australia end of May.

Not sure which way we should go. Either north to Rockhampton then across to Northern Territory or south. Through Victoria and south Australia. Couple in early 60s one female driver. 2wd ute with slide on camper solar powered ready for free camping. What are the roads like either way

If it were me in May I would go West across the Savannah Way from Qld and do the lap anti clockwise - I believe you will get better weather and coming back across the prevailing Nullarbor with the winds at your tail
Road conditions are great with bitumen on all main roads and only needing to travel on gravel for selected sight seeing trips.

River levels in May could still be high depending in how late the wet goes. I went thru last year second week of June and got stuck twice in rivers on my BMW motorcycle.
.Sorry made a mistake I went thru mid May 38 every day.

Presume that, with your rig, you will be wanting to stick with reasonable roads, rather than venture into 4WD territory.
Late May I would go through Qld - to Mt Isa then on via Camooweal and across to the Stuart Highway. North to Katherine, then west to WA.
Some side trips you could do: north from Cloncurry - Burke & Wills RH - Gregory Downs - Adels Grove/Lawn Hill. Return the same way. From Dunmarra RH, go west on gravel roads through Top Springs and Jasper Gorge to the highway - again, if the local advice is that roads are ok. Keep River National park - on NT/WA border is well worth a stay - great scenery, pleasant camps.

If you are cutting across from Rockhampton you will be going nowhere near the Savannah Way. Stick to the bitumen with your 2WD. If you are interested in the WA wildflowers aim to get to Broome by mid June and thus be there before the WA southern migration hits. You can then follow the wildflowers down the coast.
Kings Park in Perth have their wildflower spectacular in late September. Then if you wish to get the tail end of the whales at the Head of the Bight you will have to start going home fairly quickly on the October long weekend. There is possibly some whale watching along the WA south coast very early in October. Contact the tourist info people in the large south coast towns and enquire.
