my husband and I intend to travel around Australia from August and are not sure which direction to take off from Adelaide first. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Gday...
Which ever way you go, you will enjoy it.
However, it might help if you advised -
what is the expected duration of your journey?
have you been up the Centre yet?
leaving in August means you have about two months to get to the Top end and very little time up there before you would get out of there before the 'wet'
so are you going to take your time and spend it in the southern regions of SA, WA or VIC or NSW before you head northward from either of those states about the following March.
The possibilities are endless really and totally dependent on the expected duration of your journey and places you have already seen or would like to see. I would expect you have some idea of the places you want to include in your itinerary?
If it were me, I would head to Port Augusta, stop overnight, toss a coin in the morning to determine which way - north, west or east - or even south to Eyre Peninsula.
Cheers - travel safely, enjoy the journey rather than just the destination, take time to smell the roses - John

Welcome to the forum R and G
As John (Rocky Lizard) above has said.
It depends a fair bit on how long you plan to be on the road, and/or what you wish to see
In my mind, there is no best direction to travel from Adelaide, if you are doing the lap
A lot of people I meet on the road, usually go north for the winter, and then south for the summer

Head diagonally (NE) up through NSW and get to Qld, then travel Savannah Way to Katherine. Katherine to Broome, then come down the west coast and travel back to SA with a tail wind. You can branch off any where you desire depending on how much time you have.
