I drop into WikiCamps from time to time mainly to look a campsite photos but occasionally read any interesting forum comments, today there under the heading And people wonder why Councils shut camp grounds a spin off of our Filthy Campers
Anyway reading thru the comments you discover that two posters do their business in plastic bags and then bin it.
P1 doesnt and never has crapped his toilet cassette.
P2 just doesnt give a rats.
I would of thought dig a hole and bury it away from watercourses and other people or buy a porta potti and do likewise or have a spare cassette and take the fully jobby to a dump point. But for the health of others stay home or in a van park.
So in future be very careful compacting rubbish in bins to get yours in, it could be life changing literally!

Thinking, thinking, wonder what that toilet looking thingie is. Ahhh, dunno, Ill just poo in this plastic bag and bin it. Haaa, look at those funny people wheeling that little trolly to that hole in the ground with a lid and hose. Wonder what theyr doing?
Damn theres some crazy people out there. Its getting inconvienent now theres no free plastic bags from the supermarket. Might have to cut out the middleman and just poo into the bin.

Take a look around camping shops. These types of toilets are on sale. Basically a bucket in which you put a plastic bag with a toilet seat on top.

These are really good, we bought one way back in '82 when our kids were little. 10/10
When we were bush camping (real bush camps not rest stops or campgrounds) it was a real asset.
If we ran out of bags we dug a hole, positioned the frame over it & pooped away then covered it back over with soil.
No different than picking up doggy doo doo if you bag it.

We still use a long drop at chrismas, good deep hole changed every few ddays. Stainless steel dunny box with a standard dunny seat. We camp in the same spot every year, about 15 years in the current spot. When we decamp you sant see where we have been. We number between 20 and 40 people (family and friends) and upto 20 dogs. Yep it is hectic at times. The park rangers have commented on the coditions we leave.

The faeces in the bag will make an awful mess and indeed become a health hazard, surely there is a better idea then that, like using a resealable bucket & percarbonate and burying or a solidifier to treat the crap is 100 times better then crapping in a plastic bag that can be punctured and contaminate others with some else's S**t.

Went to see a Jimeoin Concert a few nights ago his suggestion well with dog poo ,was to simply leave it on the ground until it turns white,then when you run over it with the lawn mower it turns to dust

I can understand how some who have responded to this thread have 'concerns' about the issue.
However, it would seem that often folk have lead what could perhaps be called 'sheltered lives' when it comes to actually camping - ie not at a rest area or car park that has some authoritative approval for travellers to overnight.
Disposing of ones 'night soil' has been going on for a very long time. Those who have been camping in campgrounds with no facilities - eg bush camps - have been disposing of their 'night soil' in the ways that are causing some concern here. With very few exceptions, bush camping areas rarely show sign of the temporary inhabitants needing to answer 'nature's call'.
It is no different to the adding disposable nappies to a provided waste bin, provided said waste bin is not full - or overfull - when the nappie is placed there. Indeed, these are placed in home rubbish bins and collected with all the other household rubbish.
Agreed, it seems that, many find the thought of encountering 'night soil' somewhat obnoxious. I firmly agree that 'night soil' left above the ground or where others may encounter it is somewhat, at least, thoughtless.
So if folk aren't allowed to dig a hole or enjoy the luxury of a plastic bag are they only allowed to buy a 'chemical toilet' as the solution.
It was also mentioned earlier, that what of 'doggie doo doos' picked up in plastic bags and deposited in rubbish bins?

Condoning a filthy lazy action is no excuse. No thought to the bin collector manually retrieving rubbish in the case of those smaller basket type bins? No thought about the bag sitting in 40 deg temperatures bursting? Nappies are a problem also as they aren't environmentally friendly but at least they will continue to absorb.
So much for being an intelligent species, taking part in this filthy indiscriminate practice is not justifiable in my mind it's bone lazy and ignorant of others. I'm 100% sure that most perpetrators would be city bred never had to deal with such before and do not want to start. Depose of your waste responsibly!

Those were the days, camping way out in the middle of nowhere with not a soul around.
Wandering away from camp into the bush with toilet seat frame in one hand, roll of paper under arm & small shovel in the other hand.
They call it real camping, been doing it since '72. Many on here wouldn't understand it because they've never done it.
We use a Thetford Porta Potty these days, we've gone soft.

There you go. Different people different ideas. Personally I side with Rocky. If it is legal (and encouraged in the case of dogs) to dispose used diapers and doggy doo in dustbins, all properly packaged in plastic bags, then why cant we treat our own waste, night soil, **** or whatever you call it similarly.
I use the caravan toilet and porta potti depending on vehicle being used and dispose of them at the approved facilities provided in the main by CMCA but if caught in a situation where porta potti is not available. I dig a hole and cover immediately I'm done.

We still use the old aluminium chair with the webbing,replace the webbing on the seat with a wooden toilet seat.
Erect a popup tent for privacy,fill the hole in when leaving, all good.
However, it is still into a plastic bag ... not tolerable it seems

It happens at home as well how many here have a neighbours dog that poos on your lawn,I do and I would like to rub both there noses in it thats a problem in my book ,when some individuals do not clean up properly at a camp site you can simply drive away from it is not the end of the earth,it just goes with the territory unfortunately ,the vast majority do the right thing,people cramped in lititle wiz bangers find it very hard to live higenically there part of the problem in my view.

I'm one of those disgusting individuals who have been named on Wikicamps. My involvement started when I queried what was wrong with putting your faeces in a bag and binning it which someone else had been harangued for doing. Immediately I was named a bin ****ter and told I should be ashamed of myself because soon the plague will break out and free camping will be banned everywhere and bags will explode and the garbos will all get splattered. At no time did I say we did this all the time. I have been camping all my life and personally have never put my **** in a bin. Once when caught short and unable to dig a hole or get to a loo my partner crapped on sheets of paper, wrapped it bagged it and put it in a bin. I can see why it happens. The main instigator of the campaign against the practice appears to think if he doesn't keep his diatribe going everyone might do it and the world will go to rack and ruin. I defy anyone to say they have never put anything in a bin that is at least as offensive as human faeces. It's fun to revisit the Wiki thread and poke the bear every now and then. A reaction is guaranteed.

What's 'acceptable' versus 'disgusting' with regards to natural bodily functions is ultimately down to what the norm is for your culture, what you were brought up to believe, and most of all (and Freud had it right here) when you were reprimanded for being 'dirty' as a kid!
A couple of examples from my time on this planet...
I lived on a small island off Hong Kong for a number of years which was home to a number of ethnic minority Hakka families. They are traditional fishing and farming people, and their poo is considered a vital (and free) source of nutrients and is either fed to the fish in their carp pond or spread on the veggie patch each morning - both of which end up on their dinner table within a few weeks or months. They were bemused why the rest us would flush this valuable source of nutrients into the sea - the only alternative on that island as there was no waste treatment plant. I didn't even attempt to try and explain to them how western societies in general go to enormous effort and expense, using huge amounts of precious water and energy resources, to process human waste and then dump it in the sea or landfill; meanwhile going to similar expense, effort, and causing environmental degradation to manufacture those same nutrients for our agriculture via industrial chemical and mining processes. They'd think we were seriously deranged!
Another example. Because of my upbringing I find the mainland Chinese habit of snorting down their 'snot' then hacking it back up into their mouths, finally to be spat on the ground, all accompanied with suitable body contortions and loud snorting/grunting noises, to be particularly distasteful. However, when discussing this with a Chinese friend one time he explained that the Chinese find the western habit of blowing your nasal secretions into a cloth (handkerchief), wrapping it up and carrying it around in our pocket for the next couple of days, equally disgusting. I have to admit I'd never thought about it that way before, it was just the norm in my society and I had never questioned it! Similarly, my father used to tell tales of when he was growing up in the UK in the 1920s and 30s when people regularly spat on the floor in public places. Pubs would have sawdust on the floor to soak up the spittle, the floors of trains, busses, and trams were apparently awash with the stuff, such that slipping and injuring yourself was commonplace, and public buildings such as railway waiting rooms and government offices would have spittoons. This was only one generation away, and in our own societies not some foreign culture, but would be unthinkable today. And apparently it only ceased because the link between Tuberculosis transmission and spitting was established, not because it was considered 'disgusting'!
Final example from my experience was when I was trekking in the mountains of the Golden Triangle in Thailand's north. Each night we would stay with hill tribe villagers who lived in very basic huts where the ground floor was beaten earth and functioned as a 'barn' for the domestic animals during the night, while a bamboo mezzanine floor above this was the living, eating, and sleeping quarters for the whole extended family - and us as their guests! When one couple commented how 'uncivilised' it was for animals and people to share one dwelling, our guide told us something interesting. He said he was finding it increasingly hard to find villages who would give overnight accommodation to tourists. You see, those villagers don't have toilets, they just discreetly go into the undergrowth, dig a hole and do their business and cover it afterwards. The tourists however, not being able to find a porcelain bowl with a flush handle, and not wanting to venture out into the 'Jungle' alone at night, would just cr@p in a dark corner of the village compound. The villagers would awake the next morning to little piles of human excrement topped with white toilet paper strategically placed around their village. They would quietly clear up after us and cheerily wish us on our way with supplies of fresh water and fruit, and then wonder how such uncivilised people could exist in the world!
Anyway, sorry for rambling on, but hopefully someone found it mildly interesting. I guess the only point I'm trying to make is - it all comes down to what you are used to, so don't be too quick to judge others.
