A while ago I saw, and reported a sign, in Rockingham Western Australia, put up by the police which said, report any suspicious activities, etc, or words to that effect. If I remember correctly, some people thought that I was implying that their town was full of thieves, etc
To balance everything up, today I was in the industrial area of Bunbury Western Australia, (no houses in that area, which I know of), and low and behold, the same type of sign was there. It is mobile sign on a trailer with flashing lights.
I therefore ask the question, is crime getting worse, or are the police just trying to keep ahead of the criminals with the flashing mobile signs, on a trailer

Sadly its inevitable, as the population grows so will the proportion of criminal activity.

Proportion of crime is reported as # per 100,000 population. Its the # that you have to watch and that is supposedly going down.

Our town must be crime free 'cause there's a flashing sign on a trailer in the main street.
It says MAIN ST CLOSED TO TRAFFIC ON 24TH DEC. FOR CHRISTMAS PARADE.

Silly question but are these signs referring to suspicious activity related to crime or are they referring more to potential acts of terror especially considering the time of year. One of our local radio stations this week was reporting that the crime figures in all catergories went down last year with the exception of shop lifting.
Cheers

Crime figures are exactly the same as the Unemployment figures. They have changed the criteria that's all. Bunch a lot of crimes together so the figures drop.
The way that crimes are reported has changed the same way. It's all Spin.
The way they spin the figures is what has changed.
Take an average 50 man unit in a jail.
The Govt figures show 10% of those inmates are in for drug offences.
In reality some 80% are drug related crimes.
From breaking into a house to steal, to vehicle offences, Violence including sexual assaults. All related to Drugs despite what Goverments tell us.

I do not recall the exact words, BB, but I am sure it was about crime, there was a mention of remembering to lock up, and keep keys safe, etc

Yeah Tony I was just wondering because the action you quoted on the sign is pretty much what the authorities tell us we need to do after every random act of terrorism. As far as the crime statistics are concerned i have no idea whether they are playing with the numbers or not. What I do know is that when we were kids we could go out without bothering to lock the doors nowadays I would be reluctant to leave the doors unlocked even when we are in the house....
Just a warning a friend of ours went xmas shopping the other day at a very large and well populated local mall, she took a load of things out and put them into her car when she realised that she had forgotten something. When she returned the second time some feral had broken into the car and stolen all of her shopping. Xmas is a time that petty crime skyrockets in large shopping malls because the offenders are opportunists who know that they only have to watch and wait for someon to drop their guard..
Cheers BB

Agree. We never locked up either. All cars were manual and 14 year-olds couldn't drive them. Our house never had anything worth stealing. A piano, fridge and TV were way too heavy to nick. We had a built in copper in the laundry. Hub caps, the wood pile and garden gnomes were knocked off but there was a limited market.

I don't think a simple count or comparison of the numbers alone tells the true story.
What has changed over my lifetime is the propensity of criminals to commit violence in the the course of "ordinary" crimes. Most often this violence is either not reported in the media or receives insignificant coverage because it's so common and therefore not news worthy. However being hit in the face and then kicked in the body and head whilst on the floor in one's own home is the sort of thing which has a life changing psychological impact even if the physical impact is short term.

"Supposedly" is right. It's only criminals who have firearms in order to protect themselves in their own homes - law abiding people are not permitted to own or use firearms for such a purpose. We just have to put up with being beaten up, knifed or raped.

Gday...
It is not just USA that has a high 'crime' rate.
Murder. In 2014, the Philippines has a murder rate of 9.84 per 100,000 people, with a number of 9,784 recorded cases. The country also has the highest rate of murder cases in Southeast Asia in 2013, with a rate of 8.8, followed by Thailand.
There were 487 homicide incidents in Australia between 1 July 2012 and 30 June 2014. The homicide incident rate of 1 per 100,000 in 201314 is the lowest recorded since 198990.
Homicide. According to a 2013 report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), between 2005 and 2012, the average homicide rate in the U.S. was 4.9 per 100,000 inhabitants compared to the average rate globally, which was 6.2.
Gun ownership in Philippines is at least at the same level, or higher, than USA.

It's a bit more complicated than that John.
Switzerland has the highest per capita rate of firearms ownership on the planet including common possession of semi automatic weapons.
However Switzerland also has one of the lowest murder rates at 0.49/100k well below that of Australia.
Correlation is not causation.
Most murders in the USA are drug/crime related - anyone who has travelled widely in that country will tell you that outside the obvious "bad" areas it is a very safe place to live.

On the one hand, you hear lots of people "thanking their lucky stars that we aren't like the U.S, as regards legal gun ownership".
On the other, I read somewhere recently that there were more guns in the community now, than there were prior to the gun buy back. (Or it may have been more than at any time since the buy back). Suffice to say, there're plenty of guns around...just not in the hands of law-abiding people.
So...guess who has 'em?

Regarding the Philippines, the figures you cite would be before the current President was elected. Since he came to power, there have been something like 4500 extra-judicial killings in the country...ironically, as part of a "war on drugs". I wonder what their figures on homicides would be today if these (State-sponsored) killings were included?
