First post from an almost Grey Nomad (sometime first half 2019 to start our Big Lap!)
We will have a motorhome-with-toad combination, and will transfer our current two NSW E-tags to these vehicles. However a question has occurred to me:
If the tag is on the toad windscreen, will it also incur its own/separate charge when the rig goes thru a toll-point?
Or should I keep it off the toad windscreen until I need it (keep it in a tin in the glovebox should prevent it being "read" I assume)?
Any/all responses appreciated.

Hi AlanMo.
Absolutely only have one tag; you WILL get "pinged" twice.
You will need to wrap the second one up in a detective proof bag and put it in the boot.
All car rental companies have these bags.
I hired a car at Melbourne Airport in July this year and thought that I would take my etag with me; however the hire car company have their own, so mine went into one their bags, and I put it in the boot.

Yes it will beep and you will be charged. If your current tag on the other vehicle is a car you will need to change it to a, more than likely heavy vehicle tag, incurring a bigger charge.

In Queensland you only are charged for the tug and trailer is free , Depends on the size of your motorhome you may need to get a new tag for the motorhome .

I talked to City Link in Melbourne when I bought my toad. They reckoned that I had to have a separate etag for both MH and toad. So that is what I do and I get charged for both.
When I look at my account sometimes the MH is charged as a car and sometimes something else. I havent tried towing the toad without an etag so dont know how it would be treated.

In NSW tug is charged and trailer is free - unless you put second E-Tag out of range you will be charged twice Need to put in E-Safe bag in boot, I don't know where to get the E Safe bags.

Not quite true if you apply for and obtain what they call an EMU pass then it is slightly more costly to be towing a caravan and the rego number of that caravan / trailer must be included with the application. An EMU pass is a casual pass. I think from memory it may last up to 3 months.
All the anomalies aside, the system is not bad once you know that they call a casual pass an EMU pass
It is paid through your nominated credit card as a direct debit for journeys completed within the set time.

From memory use should be able to register a few number plates to the one E-tag. The system knows if it is a truck or car. When I changed cars years ago there was space to put in a few Regos. So you can share the one E-tag with both of your vehicles.

Are you going to require tags in both vehicles so they can be used individually at the same time? If not then you only need to take one tag. When you parked the motorhome swap the tag into the toad. You can then drive the toad whilst the motorhome is set up on site. We just got one E-tag for the two vehicles and two mounts for it. Both vehicles are nominated on the account. This worked a treat until we did need two E-tags mounted simultaneously.

I have an old NSW RTA e-tag which I was considering cancelling some time ago, the RMS person I spoke with said I needed to send the e-tag back to them by registered mail and to wrap it in a few layers of foil so that it didn't incur any charges while in transit. (I still have it after getting the run-around from the Brisbane toll road mob Linkt). On the rare occasion I use toll roads I've always had it in the motorhome when towing the car and never had any problems. I can swap it between the two vehicles as needs be as both rego numbers are registered to the tag.

That's correct. In Vic (i.e. Citylink & Eastlink) you can have up to 10 vehicles on one account. Each can have it's own E-tag, or they can share one tag if each vehicle is in the same vehicle class. No extra fee for a caravan/trailer.
Re. the toad: Easiest way to clear it up is to call the local authority in your state to see if they classify it as a trailer - or not.

Wrap etag in alfoil. That beats the sensors to get an extra charge.
