Interesting to note that there was media comment today saying that there is an interest by politicians to conduct an enquiry into fuel pricing.
ever since Woolworths and Coles came into the market and took the major share of servos the price has become a joke and just as an example in the lower mountains we dont have a Woolworths but Coles Shell at Blaxland $163.9, 7/11 at Blaxland 123.9, United at East Blaxland $121.9 and Caltex at Glenbrook $123.9 all prices are for E10.
Diesel at Coles is $171.9, Coles always seems to be 10 to 20 cents per litre dearer than other servos which I suspect means their Petrol is of a much better quality.
I use the NSW Government fuel check app when purchasing fuel and appropriate local apps when in other states.
A major issue in fuel pricing is the Government charges with TWO lots of tax per litre we pay fuel excise and then GST
How much per litre are you paying and is it realistic???

I have never bothered with these fuel discounts, too hard on the administration! But do try in general to buy at the lower end of the cycle.
I do feel sorry for remote people who have no choice and have much higher prices than us city slickers!
I found Motormouth works well in general around Australia. Did use a few other price watch spps, but is was more for locating 98 which is a bit difficult in the outback. I need 95 minimum.

Woolies and then Coles came on the scene some time ago and reduced the prices at the pump. A couple of years ago Coles said they were not going to be the price leaders. Woolies have followed them since then. They both are now concentrating on their award points to attract trade. Don't expect them to be the price setters any longer.

I heard it claimed some time ago that the main difference with the premium type diesel fuels over the standard ones are that the premium fuels dont foam when filling like the cheaper ones do.
This is reflected in the price.
From my personal observations this is the case but unfortunately I am presently unable to provide a link to that info.
Of course any retailer may wish to enter into a discount war if they want to, but really it is hardly a war but more a great example of collusion.....illegal in many other trading areas in this country.

Without wanting to rock the boat too much by contributing a couple of facts into the discussion, research shows these figures.
1975:- Average wage was $7600 and petrol was 57 cents/litre
2015:- Average wage was $72,000 and petrol was $1.20/ litre.
Simple maths shows that wages have risen 945% and the price of fuel has risen a miserable 210%.....
Cant be bothered researching diesel prices, but I dont believe there is any huge variance on that 210% percentage increase?
Perhaps,if you dont like the fuel prices, you could show your disapproval by boycotting all servos, and staying home instead?
I take the view that if you cant afford the fuel, you cant afford the car?
Safe and happy travels to all, particularly to those who simply fuel their cars, pay the price, and get on with life.Cheers

There would not be as many complaining about the current costs if the enormous proportion of tax that is raised by fuel sales was actually being spent where it was supposed to be...on our roads.

Currently in the Murray region, the local Woolies/Caltex currently has Vortex diesel $1.57. Filled up in Melbourne (east) few days ago before leaving at $1.66. Not the first time we've experienced lower prices in the country, all the talk about higher prices due to transportation costs is utter garbage. Metro area outlets (Melbourne at least) are just price gouging. And why are eastern suburbs consistently dearer than west?
Oh, silly me. I forgot we should just accept that it's all to do with wholesale crude prices, and how many times it snows in December, then there's the emu's, they definitely influence retail fuel price fluctuations....

Hi Brett.....it is easy to use statistics over a short time to prove a point. My stats are over 40 years, whereas yours are over a year.No way have prices risen 30% in 12 months.Easy to one year take the price of fuel at the low-point in the price cycle, then next year take the prices at the top of the cycle.Pointless exercise.

Gday...
No wonder there are such myths always floating around.
As an example, my current and previous vehicles have been CRD diesels - Hyundai Terracan for almost three years and now a LR Discovery 3 for the past 10 years.
I travel full-time, towing my 2,700Kg van, and use whatever fuel that is available wherever I am in Straya. I have used every brand available on the market in those past 13 years and have yet to have any problem with the injectors or any other part of the fuel system.
Hyundai did 75,000Km before I went to the Discovery which now has 266,999Km.
I have not experienced even any adverse, or advantageous, fuel consumption figures from any brand either.
I am CERTAIN there are many members on this, and any other, forum who will also consider it a little misleading that BP or Caltex are the ONLY 'clean fuels'.
Having said that, it is certainly true that CRD diesels are not happy with any fuel that is not 'clean' - but BP and/or Caltex are not magical.
Cheers - stay well and safe travelling - John

Cents per litre was far less than that.
I started driving in 1975 and fuel was under 20cents /litre then.

Interesting to see on Tuesday of this week in a smaller Riverina town and to stay in line with what some are saying of cleaner fuels etc with different brands of fuel they use and don't use any other brands, saw a Metroservices tanker filling the underground tanks at a BP servo.
Tell me now that's a higher octane fuel, I call it a mix.

Fuel prices in New Zealand
.
G'day yal, I have'nt been on the forum for a long time and i was looking back at the posted letters and came across the fuel prices in Australia, wooooow how cheap the are compare with here, a couple weeks ago the price of petrol was $2.31.9 per liter and diesel was $1.549 per liter + yes + 6.2 cent per km for a car, and vehicles over 3.5 tonne it goes up per max loading capacity. and i tell you that adds up.
I have to go for petrol tomorrow and thank goodness it has come down to $2.09.9.
My pension is just over $300 dollar per week so after all the expenses there is not much left.
Just thought i sent some info about what happens here with the fuel prices.
Take care and enjoy the cheap fuel over there in Ozzie.
Greetings,
Eddie.

Price reference to 1975 at 57c litre is too high, however there was a spike in the 70's due to the experts predicting the world was about to run out of oil. Sound familiar to today's sky falling in with man made global warming. The CSIRO also predicted in the early 70's we were heading for an ice age.
I paid 7c a litre in 1979 for LPG on my first converted car.
