Same issue in Ballarat. The Major Brands (Shell, BP & Caltex) have similar high prices with the independents (United & Metro) at least 13c/l cheaper.
Petroleum is distilled crude oil. Diesel is the first product to distill off and in large volumes. Beggars belief it's the dearest. I think it's a case of supply and demand as industry (ships & trucks) must have diesel.

Paid $1.60 in brisbane. Its certainly costing us more to travel.
You're not wrong there, and they say it won't end there, as prices are still climbing,
Makes me wonder what people who are employed in places like "Fuel Watch" get payed for, just another toothless tiger as far as I can see, all they do is tell us that we are in for more pain at the pumps, and do nothing about stopping the increases,
With the GST collected, I can't see the Govt doing anything that will jeopardize their rake off, can you ???

When GST was intruduced John Howard said that they could not tax a tax. That is why their is no GST on Council rates, as council rates are a tax.
What about fuel, their is the cost of the fuel plus excise tax,with GST added to the total . So we are paying GST on excise which is a tax.
GST on fuel should only be on the price of fuel, not on the fuel price plus excess."

Their is an extra 4c/L to the cost of diesel for the GST on excise. Excise on diesel 40.143c/L, petrol 38.6c/L.

What are you guys complaining about I was just reading about that poor woman in Melbourne whose bank account was debited $24,000 by a service station for filling her car with diesel. I don't know what that works out a litre but I'm sure it's more than $1.74

BB the woman that had her account debited by nearly $24K - will most probably be refunded by her bank the total amount previously debited. Unless the Service Station re-lodges claim she may end up with a free tank of fuel. As they say; It's an ill wind ........

Possum the report I read today said that for 2 weeks she had had little joy either from her bank or from the fuel company in fixing the mistake it had to be investigated and that would take them 45days. That was until Channel 9s ACA got involved apparently they immediately appologised and corrected it even offered her a $500 gift voucher for any inconvenience caused. The bank were also big hearted enough to waver any interest charges or fees incurred as a result of her account being in the red. All of that may or may not be true, I don't normally watch ACA and that article was the first time that I have even heard about this incident.

BB, Wow was that a $500 gift voucher or $5 ? - There is no doubt it would be a concern to most of us, particularly if her bank was claiming 45 days to correct what was virtually their mistake - If it was $500 she earned it.

Thanks John that's the article but like I said I didn't know how accurate or even how bias the reporting was. I strongly suspect that if you did the maths on the price that she paid per litre it would have been on the high end of the diesel prices in that area. She really needs that app on her phone that compares fuel prices then she probably wouldn't have gone there - at least giving her a $500 voucher she will be able to get a 1/4 of tank from them...

I use a useful little app on my phone called fuel maps. This gives me an indication of fuel prices from the various outlets wherever I travel and has saved me a lot of money in my trips across the continent. The best saving was in Wilcannia NSW. The servo on the highway was very dear but the app directed me into a back street to the local BP distributor and I saved 18 cents a litre over the hwy servo.
It's a free app but relies on people updating the prices, but still a great tool.

Travelled the Barrier Highway a couple of days ago and it was $1.729 at Emmdale Roadhouse and $1.749 at Little Topar and not much cheaper at some servos in Broken Hill. Cheapest outback diesel fuel I have bought recently is at Cunnamulla $1.619 at Webbys Roadhouse. He has IOR fuel and is cheaper than the IOR outlet up the road. About a week before that I bought diesel from the IOR outlet in Injune for $1.629 which is right next door to the Caltex servo which at the time their diesel was $1.699. Those IOR outlets for trucks are generally cheaper and they sure are a lot easier to get into with a caravan. Bloody diesel prices sure eat into the budget if you are on the move all the time.

My sister currently holidaying on New Zealands South Island posted a photo on Facebook yesterday of a service station sign board showing their prices. Unleaded 91 $2.34/ltr and diesel $1.77/ltr so who is ripping who off when it comes to diesel prices ?

G'day BB, Did your Sister also know that every Diesel Vehicle over there has to have a hub meter fitted, which measures K.M.'s traveled, they also have to buy a certain amount of mileage, so they can use their vehicles on the road, there-fore cheaper Diesel.

Do primary producers also have to buy kms for their farming machinery such as tractors because I imagine either way that would have a big impact on their operating cost ?

I would only be guessing at the price of the road tax in NZ,
What I will do is contact a mate over there, who is a dairy farmer, he will know all the facts,
it may take some time as they aren't on computers and living in the back country, the phone service is very hit or miss at the best of times,
He usually rings us come Xmas, so I reckon on waiting till then, hopefully we will get a good connection for once,
I'll be letting you know when I have some more info.

All vehicles that run on a fuel not subject to fuel excise duty (eg diesel) must have a current road user charges licence. Road user charges are distance based, and can be purchased in multiples of 1,000 kilometres from the NZ Transport Agency and approved road user charges agents. The cost of a licence varies, depending on the type of vehicle and its weight. The current cost for a road user charges licence for light diesel vehicles (weighing 3.5 tonnes or less) is $68 per 1,000 kilometres.
Whether a diesel vehicle is a small 1.5 tonne car, or a large van or SUV with a maximum laden weight of up to 3.5 tonnes, they are subject to the same road user charges. This is because vehicles in this weight range cause very little road damage. The road user charges for vehicles weighing less than 3.5 tonnes are based mainly on costs that are applied to all vehicles.
An estimated 36 percent of diesel is used off-road. This includes farms, manufacturing, industrial and commercial ventures, and boats. Taxing this would impose an unfair burden onto these sectors. Operating a refund system would be costly and cumbersome to administer and involve compliance costs without any related benefit. A refund system would also potentially be susceptible to fraudulent refund claims.
