Questions 1. does the switch have to be covered to prevent water/mud ingress? There is nothing extra provided other than the switch & battery/control panel.
2. does it go on top of the A frame or the outside vertical wall?

Hi Warren,
I can only tell you how my van is set up.
The unit is bolted to the A frame about 500mm back from the ball.
The "key" pushes into the front of the unit on its own with no other cover.
The cord should be clipped to a part the car itself like the bumper or safety chain lugs, ie, not the slip in towbar.
Hope that helps.
Cheers Vince

Just to add, the switch unit is bolted to the top of the A frame.

same as vince56 to of a frame but the safety cord should be fitted to a part of the tow vehicles chassis not to bumper or any part of the towbar. yes i know that the towbar is very unlikely to come adrift but that's exactly what this device is for, to cover if the very unlikely happens .

Just clipped from the breaksafe manual . NOTE* ATTACH THE BREAKAWAY CABLE TO THE REAR OF THE TOW VEHICLE USING A SECURE ANCHOR POINT. DO NOT HOOK CABLE TO TOW BALL OR SAFETY CHAIN ANCHOR.

Thanks Vince, Outlaw for your replies.
the switch has a comment "removal of the plunger pin when the unit is in storage will cause corrosion of the contacts & flattens the battery" I would have thought road slush/rain getting in might have also caused corrosion. Obviously not.
Nissan Patrols have a convenient "Tow" point at the rear so I'll hook it to that. I've seen countless cables hooked on to the tow bar - not legal, I know.
Otherwise, I could hook it to the bull bar - just joking!

Interesting, I would have thought there would be no stronger and convenient place to hook the lead to than the safety chain lug.
Obviously a reason somewhere.....

Yeah Vince56 I think it because it's the last safety device if you have a catastrophic failure of the towbar, there have been instances of them sheering bolts off. but i could be wrong ( just ask my wife )

The towbar on a 200 Cruiser is part of the chassis so I don't see a problem in using the safety chain attachment point.

Mine is installed on the top of the A frame & I attach the activation wire to that 'recovery loop' on the back of my GQ.
I have had to replace two switch units in 20 years due to the ingress of moisture (and one battery). I now give it a squirt of WD40 during my regular 6 monthly mtce routine, along with the 7 pin plug/socket and the Anderson plugs.

As is quite evident by my post I was commenting on what Vince wrote and he has a 200 Landcruiser

What ever, not everyone knows that little bit of information, or the fact that you have taken the post off topic to discuss your own vehicles specific design .
I have bought a kit to install on my van.
