Due to circumstances beyond our control we need to return to the Sunshine Coast from Geraldton, as we don't want to go North and then across and would like to try and avoid Perth and Adelaide as much as possible, does anyone know of a quicker/or better route (we are thinking we may have to cross the Nullabor again) we are in a Motorhome so no 4WD tracks thanks.
Look forward to some comments. Many thanks.

Hi Leither, I have no advice re Perth, but when you get across the Nullarbor, try cutting across either through Peterborough or Around Jamestown, up to Broken Hill then across via Wilcannia, Nyngan and from there the choice is yours to either cross to Coonamble or straight across to Gilgandra and thence up the Newell to Goondiwindi - whether you want to head back to Brisbane or to the Sunny Coast direct will dictate whether you go via the Gore Highway or the Cunningham Highway. I would head across from Nyngan to Nevertire and thence to Gilgandra and up the Newell if I were making the trip.
Regards
Dave

Plenty of roads from Geraldton to Coolgardie, down to Norseman, across the Nullarbor to Port Augusta, then cut across to Broken Hill etc.
Google maps is your friend.

You can get from gero to Norsman by cutting inland and bypassing Perth. Just as you can go from Port Augusta and head northeast avoiding Adelaide, however you still have to cross the nullabor. The Great Central Road is the true shortcut, however depending on when the graders went through would be too rough for a motor home

Go Geraldton to Mt Magnet, across through Sandstone to Leinster, then south to Leonora, then Kalgoorlie, Norseman and across the Nullarbor.
That route is all sealed roads and bypasses Perth etc.
Is a caravan park at Sandstone.
As others have said, from Port Augusta, head towards Adelaide for about 25kms, then turn off to Wilmington, Orroroo, Peterborough, Broken Hill, Nyngan, Coonabarabran, Moree and on into Qld.
The route via Peterborough etc is our preffered route when going or coming north/west.

This is the route I would take. It's a couple of thousand kilometres shorter than going over the top.
Wendy gives a route of cutting across to Sandstone, Leinster, Leonora, Kalgoorlie then onwards
PeterD, and his map shows cutting across to Morawa, Wubin, Bencubbin, Bullfinch, Southern Cross, Coolgardie, and onwards
The largest town on those routes, (it is a city now), between Geraldton and Port Augusta, is Kalgoorlie
I have been on all those roads mentioned, they are all bitumen
If you are forced to travel at night time, just remember that there are plenty of Kangaroos, on those country roads
Hope that you have a safe trip
