has anyone got any opinions about Monkey Mia...is it worth a trip? Any good at this time of year? Caravan parks, rest areas etc. Unfortunately can't go on unsealed roads

Hi Sandie, We went to Monkey Mia in 2015. We went to the dolphin feeding and spent a lot of time walking the beach up around from the right of the jetty. Lots of shells on the beach, plenty of birds to see. It was a lovely sunny day - relaxing day. We stayed at a caravan park in Denham and drove out to have a look. Have a look at shell beach and the stromatolits (not sure of spelling) which are also on the way to Denham. Also as someone asked about Monkey Mia not long ago, click on search above and type in Monkey Mia and you will see earlier postings on this subject. Cheers.

Its not cheap to stay at M M. We stayed at Denham and drove up and that day the dolphins did not come and feed. So we booked some trips (sunset catamaran trip is great) went out on Useless Loop and then stayed at MM the next night. Next day the dolphins came in and I was only 1 of 2 people who got to feed the dolphins. So I thought it was fantastic. If you have a 4WD then Useless loop and Dirk Hartog Island are wonderful trips to do. You must be self sufficient though.
Sandie, my personal opinion, yes it is worth seeing. There are some charter flights out of the airstrip (Denham) that is really worth taking if time and finances permit.

That whole peninsula is worth visiting including Shell Beach.

RACWA are redeveloping & extending their Caravan Park at Monkey Mia. Should be first class once it is completed in July!
As well as the dolphins, we enjoyed a sailing cruise to see the dugongs.

We were there last month and it's one of our favourite places in Australia so far.
Denham Seaside caravan park was lovely, not too expensive at 37 a night, then just a half hour drive to monkey Mia for the unmissable dolphin experience (Carol got to feed a wild dolphin by hand) Awesome.
The caravan site at Monkey Mia (RAC) is closed being refurbed. Looks like it will be an awesome resort when it's all done.
Denham was friendly and pretty with a few nice bars and restaurants. Our favourite bar was the shark bay hotel.

We now have two threads on Monkey Mia. The first one is largely saying don't go. This one is largely favour of going. I suppose that is news groups for you. My advice for first timers to any area is to give something a quick look but do not lock yourself a long stay in case you don't like the place and wish to move on quickly. After you have had a quick look you can then decide whether to prolong the visit. You can also decide whether to return or not in your next trip through the area.

We have been twice, the first time we stayed in Denham and did a morning out to Monkey Mia, we enjoyed seeing the dolphins but it was very crowded for the first time they came in. We hung around and they came in twice more, the second time there were a lot less people, the third time there was almost nobody there. We liked the Denham Seaside caravan park where we stayed but it was very very windy there. When we were back that way a few years later we decided to stay at Monkey Mia and we really enjoyed it there. We had a seafront site, almost no wind even though it was windy in Denham again. We saw a lot more of the dolphins just by staying there, saw more of them during the day than we did at the dolphin feeding. We did a boat trip from there and saw several dugongs, and on the whole had a lovely relaxing stay. The caravan park is currently closed for major renovations, but I believe its opening again very soon. I would definitely say its worth seeing.
