Our cassette leaks when held vertical on the way to emptying. The leak comes from a yellow switch a little over half way along the top.

Actually, while it works like a switch it appears to be a two position change over - some sort of valve perhaps as there is a 'clunk' when turned about 30-degrees?

I have been unable to find out exactly what it does, so at this point cannot know what to ask for in parts - if available - to fix the leak. 

Does anyone know what that change over switch is used for? 

The switch has been left in the one position since we bought the van and it has worked OK installed.

It opens and shuts the round cover to allow your waste to go in canister. Remove big round section on top of canister and give a good clean. There are some moving parts under that and could do with a little lubricant from time to time.

Do a search for Thetford Canister here on the forum as I put up info and pics this time last year. You might need to use a diffegent word as I can't remember what heading was.

I'll check it out tomorrow. 

The cassette is one of the older ones without wheels, meaning that it has to be carried by the top handle. When I put my hand on the bottom handle to upend it - yuck!

I bought a new one with wheels and if I can fix up the leak on the old cassette that can be used as a spare.

Thanks for the picture. No.1 is the switch that leaks. There will probably be an 'O' ring or something that can be replaced.

I have to say that the description of No.1 is a bit hard to follow. Perhaps it has been translated from German - or where ever Thetfords are made?

Actually, I first thought that the leak was from the two shell halves of the body, but after filling the cassette with water and standing it on end saw that the water was coming from the No.1 switch.

I'll have a look at fixing the leak in the next few days.

The same happened to me about six months ago

Part number 1, in Rockylizard (John) picture started to leak, as I carried the cassette

I purchased that part, (blade opener) and also replaced the (lip seal), and fitted them

From memory I brought the parts from Caravan Plus

Watch the video below a few times to see how it is done, because everything will be by feel, as you can not see anything

Many thanks for the link. I watched the video and feel that I should have no trouble in doing the maintenance. Looking at the cassette it appeared to be a sealed unit and therefore not repairable. 

I'll make sure that my gloves are a bit longer than the ones the person in the video was wearing though!

As it happens I regularly buy items from Caravans Plus so am familiar with that company. For anybody that has never bought from them I can recommend them.

Thanks for the information. As it happens I keep a aerosol can of olive oil in the en suite to give the bowl a squirt from time to time. I'll be replacing the seal and the blade opener assembly in the near future and will make sure they are lubricated.

I bought a brand new wheeled cassette to use in the meantime, after repairing the old one I'll keep it as a backup.

Thanks for that Peter D. But I had already printed out a listing of parts and prices from Caravans Plus. As there is no rush because I now have the wheeled cassette I'll buy the parts when we return from our rally next week.

By the way, the prices of parts from Caravans Plus beat anywhere else - including eBay.

We have only just bought our first caravan with an en suite - so the 'care and feeding' of the cassette was new to us. Previously we had a Swan Camper Trailer and Jayco Freedom but the wife decided that she wanted an 'inside outhouse' to avoid night time trips in the dark.
