Last Saturday most of Victoria experienced damaging winds, we arrived at the Kiata campground in the Little Desert on Friday, it was calm at the time but we made sure that
we didn't set up camp anywhere near the River Red Gums. A series of cold fronts came through on Saturday with high winds & heavy rain.
Quite a few trees lost branches, all of them were the so called ''widow makers'' (River Red Gums). It's calm & sunny here now & we're still alive to enjoy it!

There doesn't have to be wind for them to shed limbs. I believe they shed lower limbs so more nutrients can go to the higher branches & thus a better chance of survival.
Cheers Pete

A nice hot day in dry weather and without wind can be the worst conditions for this to happen ......

The box section of the Eucalyptus tend to drop their branches on hot dry nights. One species is even called the bastard box because of that habit.
