NT government will fund five new swimming spots, accessible by 4WD, at least another 40 kilometres of 4WD tracks, mountain bike tracks, at least three new campgrounds and at least one additional picnic area, within the 1,500 sq kilometre landscape.
... that was my first reaction when I read the story.
However, they say - "...five new swimming spots, accessible by 4WD, at least another 40 kilometres of 4WD tracks, mountain bike tracks, at least three new campgrounds and at least one additional picnic area"
That sort of gives an indication that it just might not be "Disneyland-like".

I suppose they will have to cover it by charging entrance fees. The time I visited, I thought even then it was a bit overdeveloped. Walkways and paths etc.

The way Govt contracts are costed/inflated, $12M won't go far.
Yep, probably result in steep NP or Native Title Holder fees.

Over developed you say? You ain't seen nothing yet.
Perhaps the reason it's so popular is that Kakadu across the highway is soo expensive to enter. But they'll fix that!

A reason for the high visitor numbers is the volume of day trippers from Darwin, especially with day trip tour companies. The volume of these probably far exceeds that of visitors who camp in the park.
If some areas are opened up, away from the current tourist strip from Batchelor to Wangi, it could reduce numbers pressure on that part. I am sure there would soon be 4WD operators offering day trips to the new parts, for the ex-Darwin market.
A decade ago, we spent some months working at the old Monsoon cafe, then the only place that offered meals at that end of the Park. We did pre-arranged lunches with several of the day trip companies - it was quite common to be doing lunches for over 100, a day. I am sure numbers have grown greatly since then.
