I'm planning our first long trip from Melbourne to Brisbane.
We plan on going up the Newel Hyw taking 4 or 5 days to do this.
Travelling around 400 to 500 ks per day. More or less.
Any hints on good places to stop over night.

There are ma many spots off the highway. Look up the town of Premer cheap camping at the Apex park great pub. Best hamburgers take away if you wish.
One at Pallamallawa 13km east of Moree. Binnaway. Or Moree showgrounds if it hasnt rained (boggy), Bellata golf course, Toowoomba Federation park south end , forbes by the river Wheogo park (free). Enjoy. Tony

Ardlethan a couple of K's off the Newel have set up some overnight stopping spots, If the timing is right a nice stop. Right in Town.
I sometimes stop at Hickey Falls about thirty K's South of Coonabarabran. A freecamp on the left heading North. The Australia Telescope at Narrabri is worth a look if you have time for a twenty K detour . It has Five Radio telescopes . I am led to believe they used Visuals of one of the dishes in the Aussie movie "The Dish".
The Caravan park at Peak hill is a reasonably priced CP. Last time I was there $29 for a powered site for two. The Shower block has a heated floor.
If you are going via Goondoowindi to Toowoomba the Showgrounds at Millmerran are very basic but only $20 for a powered site. About three K's out of town. The road is on the left side of town on the way out of town.

Not sure as we free camped on that section. Goondiwindi has an excellent chinese restaurant opposite the library though. and not expensive and is open for lunch too.
clifton showgrounds (between warwick n toowoomba is a good place to stay. We paid $10 per night for 2 people. Had power n water)

Still on the way to Brisbane and in the general area, Hickey Falls (lovely overnight spot as noted), Texas (freebie on the river) & Bingara (freebie on the river and a paid one nearby).
Texas has a dump point and free hot shower in town.

Don't miss Warrumbungle National Park near Coonabarabran. Same goes for Mt Kaputar NP near Narrabri.
Slightly off the Newell Hwy, both have spectacular scenery & good campgrounds, that's if you enjoy nature.

RustyD is right Texas is great. Stantjorpe is also but 100km of rough tar between. Bingara is out of the way but a great town.

4 or 500 km per day for 4 or 5 days won't be much of a holiday. Cut the driving in half at least, get off that horrid highway and you just might enjoy the stops.

Good advise.
If we drive 400kms in a day we wonder about all the interesting things we've missed on the way.
Doing it for 4-5 days in a row is a no brainer.
We stay off main highways as much as possible.
There's more to see & it's far more relaxing on decent back roads without all the traffic & potholes made by trucks.
