We are New Zealanders coming over to travel around Australia for 2 years. We bought a new tug & caravan and we are trying to register both in Victoria. We dont have an address in Vic to register the vehicles and where they will be parked. Although we wont be parking it up as we intend to travel for for 2 years.Any ideas how to register the vehicles when we dont have an address. Thanks Neville & Polly

The state registration authority is Vicroads, you can ring them on 13 11 71 if you're in Oz, or +61 38391 3216 from NZ. They will certainly want somewhere to send any infringement notices etc. but I'd suggest a chat with them to find out exactly what scope exists.

The "garaging address" for registration does not have to be the same as the postal address.
In SA you can use anyone's address as a garaging address, with their permission. The local dealer that you purchased from might oblige or many people use a caravan park.
Cheers,
Peter

Gday...
It believe it must be a 'physical' address ... for the serving of notices etc
and for insurance to determine the premium.

you can have a PO box where all correspondence (including infringement notices) can be sent but still need a 'garaged' address even if travelling full time. We had to have a Victorian Licence to register a vehicle in Victoria. You can also sign up to VicRoads on line and then all re-newels are accessed this way - They send an email reminder when anything is due. But all of tat is not much help if you can't come up with a garaging address.
What about contacting a caravan storage facility - if the storage fee was cheap enough it might be worth considering paying that even if you don't intend using it - not sure about their fees but one near us was $12/week - might be able to negotiate a special deal if you are not actually using their site.

You are quite correct - it is permissible to have a PO Box (or anywhere else) as a "correspondence/postal" address - however, service of NOTICES - eg legal documents not traffic infringements - are served to the 'physical address'. The physical address is also required for insurance purposes as one of the factors in determining the cost of the premium.
And yes any physical address will do - if one has a PO Box for correspondence - and accepts/receives emailed notifications/renewal advices - then any physical address is acceptable.
I know VicRoads require some proof that the physical address pertains to the person who is registering the vehicle - eg electricity/gas bill or rental agreement or receipts for site fees. Occasionally, a letter from the van park owner confirming the person is a long-time resident.
