Triton and Ranger Fuel economy pulling a small Van

Hi all we have a Karakampa (1700kg ATM) which is a small van and we are looking at upgrading our tow tug (Hyundai Santa Fe) and we would be interested to hear from those of you that are towing a small van with a Mitsubishi Triton and a Ford Ranger and what your towing fuel consumption is and do you tow in top gear or the next down gear. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Mate has one that he tows a 1.5 to 2 tonne trailer (depends what machines are loaded), it is hook on 95% of the time ,day in day out. Its heavy on fuel. His is a diesel triton cheers blaze
ps turning circle of a mack truck, fixed it a bit by winding the stops in on the steering. Uncomfatable to ride any distance in, great reliabity

Hi Sandy , we towed a 3.2 tonne van with our ranger , total GCM 5.960 tonne , on the flat it was around 18 litres to the 100klm up and down hill say the new england highway in windy conditions , it was around 20 litres per 100klm . thats sitting on around 90 - 100 klms where possible .

We tow a van thats two ton with a Mitsubishi Challenger 2011 model (same engine as the Triton)it tows the van very nicely ,the only problem is on rare occasions it will lock the transmission in second gear if over stressed,this has happened a bout four times over the past six years ,to fix theproblem its a matter of pulling over and turning the ignition off and on again.thought about buying a new vehicle like a isuzu love there diesil engines, We can easily afford a new car but spending an extra 30 to 40K to replace a good vehicle and getting nothing for it I dont think its worth it at the moment, the newer model challenger now called the Pajero sport has a smaller body,and a weird shape (personal opinion)and an eight speed gearbox I would think the new Turton Ute would have the same running gear as the Pajero sport ,I believe some like it and good luck to them...

Thanks Guys for your info, we seem to be chopping and changing but my wife is a bit worried about a ute regarding getting to things in the tub as we are not getting any younger and she found the tailgate heavy though I have heard you can get gas struts for them so we are now looking at waggons. We looked at an Everest today but couldn't drive it as it was sold (we are still getting ideas) it looks good. We are also going to have a look at an Isuzu MUX we might even put it on hold for a while yet we got drawn in by some of the specials that are going at the moment.

Thanks John we are taking our time, we might wait till the end of the financial year if we don't sort something out. We are now going away from the utes as I am worried my wife might find them a bit difficult to park and she was worried about the weight of the tailgate but we have found you can get gas struts for that.
