My wife and I love walking on the beach and have found various items on isolated beaches after rough seas , we have a large collection of genuine sea glass and there are beaches that seem to produce it more regularly than the odd bits . Is there anyone else that collects it I'd be interested to see what you have found and where . We love wandering along the beach on a calm sunny day for hrs . maybe one day we'll find a large chunk of ambergris somewhere and we'll buy a new rig . See you on the beaches.

Yep, Lambie and I do the same. The best find was a long line transmitter beacon float up in Queensland on Fraser Island.A local had always wanted one. Sooooo we did a trade for six glass fishing net floats. He wanted it so bad.
Probably worth a hell of a lot more. It was very large. But I wanted the glass balls more.
I have referred to similar in our Travel blogs. Glass bottles from around the world. Most would come from boats of all discriptions.
I collect small fishing floats for marking my crab pots too.
We will walk all day to get to the best spots that can't be accessed by 4 x 4's. Please take plenty of water and a good fitting hat, Plus reef walking boots as I walk on top of dead sea weed.
There are many broken glass bottles hidden within.
For safety to when you hit the beach mark out you entry point VERY WELL as after walking in one direction, it may be 6 miles back. Hence the water. A personal EPIRB is a must for us, as we are in the back of behond.
Its a lot of fun. PS: we take a packet of loo paper for an emergency No2. plus a Ciggarett lighter and 2 led tourches in case we lose the light on our return trips.Plus a few metres of lite twine to rope, the bottles together.
Keeps us fit to boot. A Beer at the end never tasted so good.

Where we go camping each christmas the girls go down the beach collecting small bits of pottery, they have some lovely pieces that have been picked up over about 30 years, Sister inlaw has the keel beam out of the same wreck that washed up about 10 years ago, was going to be cut up for camp fire wood, now preserved as part of an ornamental fence in an undamaged condition.

Hi Rocket, sea glass is broken bottle pieces that have been tumbled and blasted by sand in the ocean , we have all sorts of colours from some really old bottles (ie) brilliant blue like old medicine bottles to rarer yellow and red . Some pieces look stunning , they make jewellery out of it earrings , rings and necklaces . There are people who break up glass and throw it in a tumbler and try to sell it as sea glass , it looks too perfect sometimes and not pitted enough. Google it and see some people sell it on ebay . Theres one beach in america thats covered in it , it looks speccy , no one is allowed to remove it if your caught its a fine , it was an old dump where people threw stuff off a cliff . over many many years its all washed away or rotted and the glass remains as glass pebbles . Ambergris is a smelly lump of sperm whale **** , but its not faeces , they pass it out the back end. If theres something in the whales gut such as a squid beak , the gut coats it with a waxy substance , eventually they pass it , some pieces have been up to 80 kg and it sold for $3 million. A couple found a piece over at streaky bay around 20kg around $6 - $700,000.00.

Used have a lot of holidays at the beach in the winter when I was a kid in the 1950s. Too expensive otherwise. We always went beach combing. Driftwood was my mum's favourite and she used decorate pieces and put on the mantle piece. Only discarded them two years ago when mum went int aged care. Unusual shells, sea glass and stones polished as per sea glass were also collected.

We love collecting sea shells with the Grandkids - Problem is we end up with a car full of sand. But it is worth it.
Happy and giggling kids is better than any ambergris.

We enjoy wandering along ocean beaches while we're away in the cooler months. Best after a big storm. Always something of interest around.
We live near a Port Phillip Bay beach, nothing much of interest to collect once the cigarette butts, stubbies, hypodermic needles & condoms have been cleared by the shires machine every morning.

I was just googling amber gris, and found its illegal to import or sell the stuff here, but not in kiwiland or UK. There are some strange laws about......

The missus and I collect different things on the beach. She is more successful than I. She collects sand dollars. Or cats eye shells. She has heaps of them. I look for money in plastic bags. It has to be in plastic bags cause if it was a wallet of cash I would be obliged to hand it in to find the owner. But money washed up on the beach is probably money gained for drugs or some other illegal activity that has been thrown over board as the police launch approached to arrest the crims. So I dont feel that I need to return ill gotten gains to crims. Trouble is that in the decades of our beach walking she has found many cats eyes and for me, a total failure. But its fun and good exercise all the same. Lol. Ps . So if any one finds money washed up on the beachin a plastic bag, its mine.

Two years back we were walking along a remote beach casting lures as we went. My eyes caught a red lolly wrapper in the small wash. it tuned out, to have my name all over it.Would have blowen over board from one of the day dive/Whale boats.$20 thanks for coming.
I wouldn't mine a few slabs of vacum sealed Mellons and Pineapples. Pre counted of course.
