Hi Chris and Janine, Came back from Tasmania in August and made it to Ballarat and pulled over into a siding overnight, cannot remember exactly where now, but it was off main road and very quiet (not in a trucking bay)! Daylight saving now so you should find lots of places before dark.
Take care
Helen

Head down Geelong Road almost to Avalon airport - plenty of room at the Shell servo, and a good meal as well. Free camp. Servo open 24hrs, use their amenities.
Can get to Western Freeway through Bacchus Marsh, next day. Pretty quiet we have found, trafficwise.
(Both sides of the highway now.)

Ok Chris, Once you get through suburbia (about 1 hour), then there will be plenty of road side stops, but trucks can be a bit noisy at night. Otherwise caravan parks, motels everywhere.
Tell your wife not to be anxious except will tell you the Westgate bridge can be a bit hairy getting on with the trucks zooming past you doing 100 but I was driving a new van that I bought in Tassi and was a bit nervous but got through fine.

Have to agree. We live down this way. Easy to get to, safe and convenient!
Geelong Showgrounds good too

Agree with above, the servos on the Geelong freeway both sides have free camps, which always have caravans parked up (I live at werribee and frequently travel to Geelong). The servo is about 15/20 minutes past the hoppers crossing/werribee exits towards Geelong, very easy to find and easy to get to from the spirit. straight over the Westgate bridge and follow the freeway until you get to the servo on the left (at Avalon).

Not too long ago we did a day sailing to Tassie & a night sailing back. The day sailing was a totally boring experience.
The novelty of being on a ship looking at endless ocean soon wears off. We ended up playing Disco Bingo to fill in time!
If we ever bother to go to Tassie again it'll be two overnighters for us. Our advise is to change your booking.

I have been over twice the first time was on a motorcycle trip we had a cabin downstairs ,it was small and uncomfortable I could not sleep, the second trip was with the van we found a nice spot to sit upstairs and crossed in perfect weather chatting and enjoying other peoples conversations, less expensive and much more enjoyable ,if you were in the navy you might enjoy those bunks

Our experience was the opposite of Desert Dweller been over and back 3 times at night in cabin. The last time a daytime trip each way, found that to be far more enjoyable and cheaper.
Cheers

HI all, talking about a Tassie trip... as it will be my first experience ..... and I will be travelling south from Camden NSW towards Melbourne to go to Tassie on the Ferry.
This may sound an unusual request but .... I'd like to ask if anyone can tell me: A quick way to get to the departure point of the ferry from NSW & has anyone found any free camps close to where the boat departs please? Gwynnie

Hi Gwynnie - are you going night or morning? The above one is possibly the only free one, except for an overnighter (sort of unofficial) at The Boulevarde at Port Melbourne, easy access off the West Gate Freeway via Todd Road, , you will come to a beach, with houses opposite, lots of people in their
vans stay there overnight, straight run to the ferry from there
Go on Google Maps - put in The Boulevard, Port Melbourne - follow map round to the ferry

Hi Jules, Thanks for your help with being in Melbourne the night before for the Tassie Ferry. I will be going on a day trip. Hopefully the weather holds as I get sea sick quite easily. Meeting up with fellow travellers there somewhere on the Apple Island. I am a full week ahead of the pack so I am heading towards the east coast to check out the fishing!! Gwynnie
