hi everyone, we have ants again. We have used borax, mixed with honey and peanut paste and water bEfore. They ate it all and no more ants. Have used ant rid another time and no more ants. This time they will not touch either. Anyone used something else to get rid of them. Also, do not want to use a roach or flea bomb in the van. Powder is of no use as they r already in the van. Thanks.

I know what you mean. I can't help you inside the van,but outside I love nothing better then a pot of boiling water. Meat ants love it. You boil their mates and they feast for hours there after.
A slow pour from the kettle down into the nest/ nests slows em up for a while anyway.
I have found smoke (not the good stuff), works if you can get it lower enough to the groung and not set fire to the surrounds. They think bush fire and retreat to the nest.
Bug spray around the legs and tyres works a bit.Then the buggers fall from the trees.
Sorry, But when the ants get going, I will let off a flea bomb both inside and out.I hold a can upside down and walk around the van.Its the only way I have had 100% We are sill here to tell the story.

I mixed some derris dust (Tomato Dust) with peanut butter and placed in a round plastic (Chinese food) container and drilled several 3mm holes and placed outside at home, all ants gone within one week - but I would imagine it would work just as well in a caravan.

Tallon sold in woolies. Its a gel in a syringe $7 lasts a long time and really works for inside

Cloudy ammonia on the ground around the van or tent was the product of choice when I was a kid. Ant-rid (the sticky fluid?) in a party pie dish inside.

The ants are likely coming into your van from outside to forage for food. Then take that food back to the nest. If the ants are the small coastal, argentine or Singapore ants (and you will need to find out what ants you are dealing with)then there is an effective bait in the form of granuals called Ambro sold at the big green shed. It is very expensive but has been extremely effective for me in getting rid of coastal ants when nothing else has worked at home. I have not had then entre the house since when others in our street have. As stated by others here above you need to find the highway of ants entering the van then sprinkle a small amount of the granuals onto the highway and anywhere you see them around the van. The ants will take this bait back to the nest and the whole lot wil be killed. You may have to do this a couple of times as there may be more than one nest. To keep ants out when camping I like many others have found that a ring of talcum powder around areas like wheels and stabliser legs and anything touching the ground will keep ants out of the van or camper. Ants will not cross it.

I've used Talon ant killer bought at Coles with great success. It comes in a syringe put a small bit down on where the are walking and within 10 minutes you will have a heap of ants eating it. They do take it back to the next, just keep repeating when they have cleaned it all up. Had small ants and big ants all over my driveway.

I only saw the ants after I got home

Firstly check for water leaks as ants are attracted to damp dark places to set up a new home.
Then if the borax sweet or savory doesn't work the best thing is to catch some on a strip of sellotape and get them identified at the nearest dept of ag, they are usually very happy to help and will also advise what is the best bait for that species.
Generally there are two main genus one prefer sweet the other prefer the savory, sounds silly but it was how it was explained to me by a professional entomologist.
Also stay away fro surface sprays etc, they just drive the ants to use different routes and don't solve the actual problem, things like talc work for some types but not all, Ive personally seen ants merrily marching through a carpet of talc, especially the Northern varieties.
Good luck ! it does take time to fully eradicate the bloody things, best thing is to take precautions to deter or prevent any infestation in the first place, like spraying around any thing that touches the ground or applying vaseline etc to hoses drop down legs.
In SA once we had an infestation by them walking up our water hose straight into the van ! they also enter up awnings and shade panels off the awning, guy ropes even, been there done that believe me, in our 6 1/2 years full time we learn't all the tricks the little bugger get up to.

We've used white vinegar to some success. Ant rid ..forget it. Ant bomb every three months...100% clean. Agree with the other gentleman.
We do use ant dust around wheels and legs of van to prevent incoming.
Though don't like chemicals seems to be the only thing that really works. Safe travels

Mmmm old thread but just want to ask. I made up a mix 2 parts sugar and 1 part borax with hot water. But after a day or two the surface developed a "skin" . So is that normal or do you need to boil it. It appeared to dissolve OK.
