Each year, approximately 2.7 million dogs and 3.2 million cats are killed because shelters are too full and there aren't enough adoptive homes. 56 percent of dogs and 71 percent of cats that enter animal shelters are euthanized. More cats are euthanized than dogs because they are more likely to enter a shelter without any owner identification. Only 15.8 percent of dogs and 2 percent of cats that enter animal shelters are reunited with their owners. Aug 25, 2016. One of this highest kill days that shelters have is the day after Christmas, many of the animals that did not find homes during the holiday season are deemed undesirable and euthanized to make room for more desirable animals. If you've never volunteered at a shelter, if you love animals and feel that breeding just one or two litters won't make a difference then I urge you to volunteer at your local kill shelter the day after Christmas, take it all in, the screams of the dogs being dragged to their death, they sense it, smell it, know what's about to happen to them and they don't walk willingly, they fight and struggle to hang on to the ****ty life some piece of **** breeder or uncaring owner dealt them. Then when they are done with the convulsing and pissing and ****ting all over themselves as they take their last breath they are stuffed into a garbage bag and tossed back out into the walkway in front of whatever kennel they came out of so the people cleaning will know that kennel is now vacant and can be sanitized. Once all the dogs have been tagged and bagged it's someone's job to come along and pick up all those black plastic bags of dead dogs to be disposed of. If you're out there breeding your cute little dog to make a few extra bucks I really really hope you volunteer one time during euthanasia day and be that one who carries the bags of dogs out to be disposed of. Of course I already know that will never happen, if you've ever considered doing that then you wouldn't be breeding your dog in the first place. My first dog and my second dog both came from the local shelter. Neither was a "pure" breed (what does that mean, anyway?). Both dogs were well behaved and loyal. I would like to see breeders put out of business, especially those that breed greyhounds.

Dorian, I have four dogs. They are all rescues or hand-me-downs and the difference is that I have rescued or been given them myself. None of them came from a shelter. The most recent I picked up from the side of a road in the southern Flinders Ranges after stopping to avoid running over her. She was, according to our vet, less than six months of age, is of a very small breed (crossbreed) and as we picked her up in April his opinion is that she would not have lived through the winter given her poor condition. She has her forever home and we adore her as we do all our dogs. I give up things for them and regret nothing.
This little girl went to Rainbow Bridge in October 2016.

Where did this originate? it's usual to credit news sources when quoting them, gives the reader an idea of the validity and legitimacy of the text.
I suspect the figures in this emotive laden piece originate in and relate to the US, not NSW as the title suggests.

I think that statement should probably read "due to lack of suitable restraints". Otherwise, is there any reason why English Bulldogs should be spared from the snip? IMO this breed was a genetic error, but apparently someone thought that the mistake was worthy of replication.

This from the Aust RSPCA site tells us just over 4500 dogs are euthanased annually in Australia, not 3 million.
