I travel solo in my small car, and was considering a UHF radio for communication, I can use, whilst on the road.
Do I have to buy an all out package,( installed, with antennae) or can I get away with a hand held U 80 channel UHF radio. I was looking at a Uniden 80 ch., that is retailing for $50-$80.
It is basically to communicate with fellow road users in front or behind me, which may need to be contacted for one thing or another.
TIA

A handheld will work fine for the purpose you descibe. At that price (and there are a few around that price) it will be low powered. Check all the usual camping, 4x4 and auto shops for specials.
If you want a more powerful unit look at the GME TX3100 Plug and Play that doesn't require installation costs. $263 @ BCF currently.

Welcome to the gang Maria, enjoy here and out in the playground.
UHF can be an important piece of your rig so buy quality as toys don't cut the mustard.
I see no reason why a good quality hand held wouldn't do what you say you want it for.
That said, I have a fitted GMEand wouldn't be without it. When on the road with or without the aluminium tent on the back of my Collie it gets used most days.

Hi Pomme
I'm afraid I am guilty, but only by heritage. My parents came out from The Netherlands, but I was born here. Being a grandmother now, I am called Oma for that reason. Trying to keep the tradition going, and teaching grandson, some Dutch hehe.
