just wondering if one sends a private message to another member, and he may not be expecting it, how does that member know he has received a message without going to his profile and looking on there??.

They get a email telling them they have a PM from the GN site.
You must not send nasty PM's though.

If you look at the top RHS of every page you will see the spot where you log on. When a message is received there will be a message under that. Do you see one now? You should periodically check that spot to see if you have a message.

You will only get an email if your profile is set up to receive these emails. Go up to "Logged in as" and click on your 'nick' (your profile name.) OPn the LHS or the new page you will see a heading "Profile," click on "Settings" under that. Then go through all the settings there and set the forum up how you wish it to behave. In particular look at the time zone. You can also set up the reception of an "Email Digest," I get one daily, you can see if there are topics in some of the forums you do not frequent that you may not normally be interested in.
Whilst in that section perhaps also go through the rest of the settings. If you fill in a bit in the Biography we can see your background and refer to that when answering your questions. Ditto with a bit in the Signature block. In other words make the forum work for you.

Not necessarily, it depends on their settings.
Members have to tick a box in the forum settings to receive a email advising them they have a private message.

Under your name in the Log in/Log out spot will be another saying you have a message. Click on that to read.
