My wife and I are looking to do the big lap next year when we retire, we think we have decided on the 4x4 and caravan option. Our position is we are pommies who have fallen in love with Oz as we have kids living in QLD.
We will be having to leave Oz every 3 months to reset our visa, the research we have completed appears to show there is no restrictions or problems with UK residents buying and registering vehicles in our name ?
I would be very grateful for any advice or be keen to know if anyone is in the same position and has any experience to pass on.
Wekcome to the gang Steve and Kerri, enjoy here and out in the playground.

G'day Steve and Kerri and welcome to the forum. Don't forget to try the two ongoing games here - 'Who is This' in the 'I Digress' section and 'Pick this Place' in the 'General' Section - a great source to find new places to visit. I'll just add the old proviso to check all the weights work out between tug and van.

gday Steve and Kerri welcome to the land of Oz and the forum yes you can purchase a car and van here in Australia and you said you have family in Queensland so probably best to buy your van and car in QLD for registration purposes.
We spent several months touring the UK last year and decided the hire costs were way too high and as our daughter was living in London we purchased a fantastic little diesel car which we travelled just over 2000 miles in the car cost us 500 pounds at auction and when we left it sold on Gumtree for 600 pounds, very happy with that outcome.
We hope you have a terrific time touring Australia.

A warm welcome from me also, Steve and Kerri
You should not have any problems, buying something in your own name
The backpackers buy a vehicle, and then on sell it before they leave

Be wary Steve & Kerri!
People who we call friends now came to Australia for three months but stayed for TEN years! They went back home to Manchester each year to reset their visas, health insurance, etc. They had an interest in birds & got to Townsville in their "look-around". They bought a house, 4WD, tent (an Oztent) & caravan - all of which they sold after they did the "Big Trip" after resigning from BirdLife Townsville.
Via the bird club & our daughter who was in Cambridge at the time we met another English couple. We visited them in Cambridge, they came to Townsville once in the worst possible time (a November) where their son lived (near our place in fact), & we've visited them again in Albury where their son now lives. Rose is currently in Australia somewhere looking for more Australian birds.
So be warned! Enjoy our great country, take care & don't be afraid to check the "Outback" where a lot on this forum visit.
