Can someone please tell me why there is a Bar Code on the SSM voting form (have googled several sites to no avail). I also note that on an ad I saw last night advising how to fill in the form there was no bar Code anywhere to be seen - very strange

The bar code is there to stop people photocopying the voting form and voting more than once.

They can also track who you are and how you voted from the barcode, for example SSM voting form with barcode "X" goes into envelope addressed to "Joe Blow" who votes on form and mails back to voting commission who now have Joe Blows voting form and the barcode which identifies him.
All they need to do is know which barcode went to whom and you can bet your bottom dollar they do.

Interesting Hako, Daughter did not get her letter and contacted the ABS. She was told the letter went out (admittedly to the wrong address even though she has voted at local, state and federal elections at her current address) and was told that it had been returned and marked as being received on their data base so would not issue her with another letter. She was quite upset, she wanted to vote. So my way of thinking is that they must know who got what.

I'd be more worried about web searching habits, financial, education and health records than a single tick or cross on a survey. It isn't what is known by others but how it's used that should concern you.
I've worked with personal and confidential information my entire career. Someone has to entrusted with the checks and balances.

Just wondering after they go through all this effort to get the names of the people and how they voted in some meaningless survey what exactly are they going to do with the information ? Thank god I'm out of the country and didn't get a form or I could've been on their list and become part of whatever devious plot it is that they are planning. I bet the Russians or North Koreans are behind this......

Gday...
I understand, but may not have understood correctly, the results of this 'non-binding opinion survey' will, apart from showing the total number of YES and the total number of NO votes, will also be able to show the voting outcome for states, regions, electorates and towns.

Bring on electronic voting. No more paper, please. Our Medicare number could identify us, and each card holder could choose their own PIN. Problem solved.

And if they had just made it another box on next "compulsory" voting paper.
WE'd ALL know for sure hey.
AND it wouldn't have cost the taxpayer one little red cent.
Another thing to answer for.
Complete wastage, of needed for other things money.
A lot won't vote because of their feeling for this. negative.

Agree. No PIN required just photo as per licence or passport. Bring on the Australia Card. If you have nothing to hide then you have nothing to fear,

It won't matter anyway! This is just a formality to appease the people. Not sure about the bar code.

Simple. Buggar the human rights and do gooders. Haw about the already dead through such.
The FULL ID card is best idea yet. Should have brought them in back in '70's when fist suggested. Would have saved a lot of grief over the yrs.

Bit simplistic Macka
Like Blaze suggests there are far more problems in our society than what some wear.
An example is the good ole Yew Ess of Aye ... 30,000+ killed every ... yes every ... year from American citizens with a gun.
... and back on topic ... I cannot understand why the NO supporters seem to think that same sex marriage is all about LGBTI being out to "recruit" and "turn" children. And that being gay means not having a moral compass whatsoever.
For anyone who is toying with voting NO or is a little confused.... being gay means being attracted to the same sex. Being a paedophile means being attracted to the sexual abuse of children. Two very VERY different things. Please don't confuse the two.
Oh and it seems the population has no problem with paedophiles being allowed to marry.
Does that put things in perspective ?

John you have a twisted perspective.
You are the one who went off topic about the gun deaths in the USA,then you say get back on topic.
Where are your facts or links to say the population has no problem with pedophiles. being allowed to marry.
This Yes vote is a thin wedge into the decay of our society.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFsWecC11Jc

I think the whole opinion poll will turn out to be a complete dud. If the government wanted to pass the legislation they would have done so. If the Opposition really wanted the legislation to pass they would have introduced it back when they were in Government. If the ballots returned amount to about 85% of what were sent out, then the Yes vote will need about 70% in their favour just to get the bill introduced to the House.
Lets face it, whether some bloke wants to marry his mate or some female wants to marry her friend, is not the biggest issue in Australia. The gay people that I know do not seem to feel unequal because of it.It seems the hand wringing do gooders just have another issue to belt us all about the head with. I also haven't heard any politician state that his electoral office has been swamped by people demanding same sex marriage.
I wonder how people will react if it does get passed. Wait until we have the first same sex divorce, the claim for maintenance from one of the partners or the Centrelink claim for a pension or entitlement.
