I'm a newbie to the forum. I haven't quite gone around the block, but i've done many off road trips in the Prado - the Strzelecki, Walkers Crossing, following the Darling from Bourke to Wilcannia, as long as its remote!
One thing that has always concerned me is that travelling in remote areas with no mobile phone coverage and the UHF full of static, how does anyone know where I am?
I know that there are satellite phones available, but what I am looking for is for some sort of satellite tracking where my family can see where we are (like a bread crumb trail) and two way communication so they can send and receive a simple txt message.
Does anyone have any experience in this?
Thanks
Derek

Welcome to the gang Derek, enjoy here and out in the playground.
Have you given any thought to getting an EPERB?? Once set up you can activate only if you get into real trouble.
I always let my 2 daughters know where I am or if I know I will be 'off grid' I let them know where I will be and how long. I would then guess if they don't hear from me soon after the given dates they would contact authorities. I would rather not know if they think otherwise
Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

G'day Derek and welcome to the forum.
There is indeed a device that will assist you. Have a look at the blue bar across the top of this page and click on the search
do a search for a "spot" tracker.
If you don't find what you are looking for then a search using a search engine will definitely help you.

EPIRB is a great idea. I always had one in my pack. I am looking to refit with that stuff myself. Not sure what the best system is. Is there much to be gained by having the satellite uplink to be used in a non emergency?

G'day Derek and welcome to the forum. Don't forget to try the two ongoing games here - 'Who is This' in the 'I Digress' section and 'Pick this Place' in the 'General' Section - a great source to find new places to visit. Most satellite options can be pricey, but phone based systems will have many blank areas.
