Just grab some cheese cubes and go for it, a good size hook too will help . A decent sinker as the the river flows a bit quick .Just keep it simple .Cheers

Hi there. Sorry but I think there is a bit of mis info here. The river Murray where it borders NSW is in NSW. Therefore to fish in the river Murray from Victoria you need a NSW licence which you must pay for even if a pensioner or senior. Cheers. Daz

Nearest fish and chip shop is the best option. Sorry, do not like freshwater fish in Victoria apart from Redfin or English Perch. Corn kernels from a can, cheese cubes, bait shop for bardies, scrub worms, yabbies and even left over cooked sausages work! Just make sure you get the fat layer from under the skin of Yellow Belly and Murray Cod as I reckon it makes the fish taste muddy.

Besides Carp you'll be lucky to catch a cold in the Murray River & its tributaries. Unless you get some first hand advise from someone who really knows what they're talking about.
In some spots you may catch the odd Redfin that aren't too bad eating. Good luck, hope you catch something good.

We fished there February 2016 - green algae every where although hooked a couple of massive carp that were a lot of fun . Every carp you catch is one less in the river system - go for it.

On the subject of carp there as we all know an absolute curse, that destroy our river systems and to a certain extent our native fish, you can't even eat the things ,apparently there's a virouse that can wipe the garbage out but cannot be used because the population is so high, the stench And mess would even be worse for the environment ,so they tell me ?Why not give it ago and sink serious money into the clean up,surely it can be done? And worth every cent...

Recipe for Carp.
From an old Italian woman 40 yrs ago in Southern Fishing club.
We used to remove Carp in the Backwaters on comp's by the tipper load.
Straight down the local dump. Or local farmer for turned in Fertilizer
Fish.
Scale.Gut. and backbone. NOTHING under 5 lb.
TOO many ribs and littlies.
Soak fillets in FRESH water and a little vinegar. for coupla days.
Changing water daily to remove mud.
Hand Meat Mincer..
Put the fish through the mincer. Mix with spices. Vegies. Potatoes.
Whatever you want to add to make patties.
When you get the mix right (we all vary in palate) it's quite nice.
and quite edible.
Same with Any DAM fish. Barra etc.
Soak in fresh\vinegar water for coupla days to remove muddy. Then Bake\Batter, etc.
to suit.
Some of the wogs eat the fish as is. after soaking?.

I love fishing & do a lot of Murray river fishing. You will be fine if you are fishing in the tributaries on the Vic side. If you are lucky enough to hook a cod you will need to catch it before the 1st of Sept because the cod season ends then. Opening again on the 30th November. Trout Cod are protected, so you will need to know the difference. If you want to have a bit of fun, use corn to catch carp. You can't return them to the water so you will need to dispose of any caught. I wouldn't recommend eating them though, if you have to do so much preparation to make them taste good, why bother? At the end of the day, nothing beats a nice steak on the barby.

Here's a good Carp recipe if you're unfortunate enough to catch one!
Back in '70's early '80's.
Southern Dist Fishing club. Christies.
We used to have regular weekend trips to Overland Corner and thereabouts. Backwaters.
Sometimes a Coupla coaches.
Everybody had their own Tiger worm farm in back garden.
Only rools.
6lb line. everything under 15lb not weighed in, For comp side of it.
Most were 7 to 20+ lb then.
Best trip we did was 1 and 1 \2 8 ton tipper truck loads to local farmers for fertilizer.
Council had rock crusher for road stones. Set on smaller chips. and a loader.
Council offered. Farmers happy.
we happy.
Was good fun. and helped clear the waters for one season.
2 tipper loads came back following year.
If gov't were to employ some shallow water barges to drag "Bottom dragger" nets over those areas.
They'd get some net damage but haul tons of carp.
Most live\feed on the bottom. breaking it all up for local fish feeds.
Only my thorts.
Camped near Cohuna on some water, son Matt gave me his fishing tackle and I don't know what to do to catch anything
