We were with YOUI and had a claim which we were very happy with. Next year the premium increased by 30% to $1300 so we looked around and found the RACQ offered the same policy for $814 which we accepted. Have just got the renewal notice and it has gone up by 25% to just over $1000 so we also are looking for a better deal. We checked Product Review and they have almost 1000 private reviews of the insurance companies...mostly bad which does not at all fill you with confidence either way. The dearer companies generally fare worse than the el cheapo no frill ones! Insurance is a pain really as every year you have to shop around for car, van, house and contents insurance.....bit like tax time.
ps...remember when giving a house value give the cost to rebuild - not what the house would sell for. Many people think they bought the house for $500K they should insure it for 500K but really it should be only $300K as the land portion forms no part of the insurance policy.
Good Luck.

See how you go with GIO, we've found them great. Efficient with claims as well as premiums. We wouldn't go with supermarket insurance.

Using RACV for House & Contents (2 seperate policies). In last 15 years have claimed once on house and contents at same time after a flood, contents after another flood, house after a storm. All 4 claims handled promptly and satisfactorily.
Have 4 x RACV policies (Car, Roadside Assist, House, Contents) so I'm actually locked in with the multi-policy discounts. Have used RACV house & contents since about 1980. Had Roadside assist since my first car (1971). Car insurance has varied.
Also have 2 x APIA policies (Tug & Van). APIA was the best for Van Insurance. My tug was same with multi-policy discounts with RACV & APIA and I then got discount with Van Insurance.

RACQ.
We get Cyclones. Regularly now.
UP here.
They don't query.
Assessor. He adds what YOU miss.
and job done. or cheque for parts within 3 weeks. Max.
We have home, cars, boats. van.
Everything. With them. NOT the cheapest.
But never quibbled yet.
We and a lot of others we know. Happy with the value for money
and NO hassles.
Those last 3 words make it worth more.
just for what they mean I reckon.

RE the cost to rebuild ... don't forget to allow a good sum to prepare the site for rebuild. Perhaps $30K or so. I once saw an estimate for this but unfortunately can't remember where.
Edit .. Then there's the cost of landscaping & possible pool repair, if you have one.

With the weather conditions we get ALL over Aust nowadays.
Any house I was building ebuilding in any State.
I'd be getting my builder to get copies of Queensland CAT 3 Cyclone build spec's.
and building to them.
This house has gone through 7 Including a Cat 5 (287km reading at top of hill behind us)
With not a scratch in the 21 yrs it's been here.
On side of hill facing sea.
And only a little wind whooshes on the big gusts.
We sat there with Aircond on, Watching videos and Fridges running
Genny.
It hit us face on less than 4 km from eye.
Bent 2 x Ally Sliding screen doors and around 6 ft of gutter.
That's it.
Double carport on front cost me $17.600k though
To Cat3 spec's.
Can build deck on top of later though if wanted.

You also need to factor in an amount for demolition!

Our neighbours house burnt down many years ago. They were both insurance reps but had previously been blue collar workers. They had not factored the cost of demolition nor had they updated their contents to take into account the cost of their flasher and more costly clothes.

Been with Coles insurance both car and house and contents and at renewal time only a small increase in premiums so I thought this is great, then I wrote the car off and then my troubles started.
I have never been put through a more stressful experience putting in a claim, the right hand didn't know what the left was doing, no one seemed to listen to my story as to what had happened in the accident, it took more than 4 months to get a pay out.
I am sure it set back my recovery by many months and no one took any notice of my complaints via email all I received were computer generated rote replies.
By a bit of luck I had just renewed my house and contents and was still within the 30 day cooling off period and was able to cancel the policy and place the insurance with NRMA for about $50 extra on the premium.
Definitely no more supermarket insurance for me.
Cheers
David

Try Elders Insurance, but make sure they have a local agent. Not the super cheapest, but good cover for stuff away from home. They will also do boat/trailer at a fair price. And they do pay asap if claimed on. cheers Craig
