So.. we had crossed the Nullarbor, and drove into Ceduna just in time to be hit by South Oz's 'Big Storm' in late September '16. We had a good spot in the cara park and suffered no damage. The blow held us up for about a week while we waited for power to be restored so we could get our vehicle serviced. We had a chance to have a look around Ceduna and even wet a line. Not much of a catch but it was good to indulge in our first love. Ceduna is more interesting than it might seem at first. Shelly Beach Caravan Park is the one to stay in. Great facilities, and they let us use our genny while the power was down.

After the Nullarbor and SA mallee country, into SA's cropping zone, with Nundroo Roadhouse the first stop. The roadhouse has a small caravan park, but it's not recommended. Facilities are poor. As if to emphasize the hard-scrabble look of the area, this abandoned farmhouse stands just before the roadhouse, going east. There are a lot of derelict farm buildings through the outer cropping country in western South Oz.
The lovingly cared-for Denial Bay Lutheran Church with its historic graveyard, surrounded by cropping fields, is a credit to the local community. The church is just off the Eyre Highway a few kays west of Ceduna. Although we are not religious, we photograph quite a few churches and old buildings. They are often the most interesting structures in towns and small villages, reflecting the times, old-time style and the connection the churches afforded communities back when. And the love and dedication people gave to their churches when they could often hardly afford it.
Those old Germanic names! Even though we're WA natives, both Nik and your correspondent have German migrant-to-SA ancestors in our past. Not in this district though.
The day after the 'Big Storm', and it's cutting up in the bay behind the Shelly Beach Caravan Pk.
Two days after the storm and it's still lumpy out at the port at Thevenard.
A few days post-storm and the weather is starting to settle down in Ceduna town!

Well done JocknNik, good read that I enjoyed. The history within the walls of the old house, if only they could talk. Looking at that first pic of the water being so rough I thought I was back at Greens Lake, Nth VIC on a bad day. Nice pics too.

Thanks folks! Yes, I'm fascinated by old ruins (apart from myself!). I always wish the walls could talk. As we travelled into SA's western wheatbelt, we saw so many signs of the struggle the farmers had out there. You could do a coffee table book of ruin images. Things didn't improve until we were much nearer Pt Lincoln. Then it was grass body-high to the cattle. What a contrast!
Tell you what Tony. We just want to get back and do it all again to take in the many places and things we bypassed. That's the problem operating to a timetable. We would do the same route just for that.. and probably will before long.

Hi Rocket. Sorry I didn't get on to this earlier. That structure in the water is a beach shelter. During and just after the storm, the sea level was high enough to flood the shelter. And the rather scant covering was damaged by the wind blast. That's what the netting was part of. Thanks for the kind words.

Great photos JocknNik, Just goes to show you that even though you (me) have done the big lap, there are so many places you (me) miss, don't get time for, didn't know about, took the wrong turn, or were too lazy to find.
Denial Bay is a good example. Like you, not religious, but love going into churches, new or old, any denomination. Just returned from Pontianak and Jakarta in Indonesia, where we visited two Roman Catholic Cathedrals (one Neo Gothic, one modern) and two Buddist temples, (one traditional and one modern). Would love to have visited the Mosques as well, but that is not encouraged for tourists.
